Eddie Guerrero’s Birthday: Remembering the 5 greatest moments of his career

13 November 2005.

Almost 15 years ago, WWE Hall of Fame Eddie Guerrero was found dead in his hotel room in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His nephew, Chavo Guerrero, was the first to know about Eddie’s death. Undoubtedly, he was one of the most popular superstars of Mexican descent. After his death, WWE honored Guerrero with a special tribute show for him. Both his on-screen friends and enemies broke their character for the night and were seen crying.

If Eddie Guerrero had been alive today, he would’ve won several more WWE titles, could’ve main-evented multiple WrestleMania’s, and who knows, Rey Mysterio might not have become the legend he is today.

Today is his birthday and Guerrero would’ve been 53 years old. In today’s article, we will look at the 5 greatest moments of Eddie Guerrero’s career.

#5  Who is the real father of Dominick?

Eddie Guerrero was an excellent heel. When he betrayed his tag team partner, Rey Mysterio, WWE did something interesting. They dragged Mysterio’s son Dominick in the storyline.

Guerrero teased that he knew something about Mysterio’s personal life that was hidden from the world all these years. They fought at the Great American Bash pay-per-view. If Guerrero wins, he would reveal a secret. He lost but still revealed the secret. He said that Dominick is his child and that he allowed Mysterio to take custody of him.

It led to a match between the two legends with Dominick’s custody being on the line. Although the storyline didn’t receive praise from most of the WWE fans, it was still a big moment for Guerrero and even Mysterio. The Master of 619 won the match and proved that he is the true father of Dominick. After Guerrero’s death, WWE shifted their focus on Rey Mysterio which led to him winning the 2006 Royal Rumble match.

If it hadn’t been for Guerrero’s death, Mysterio would probably have never won the WWE Championship. And these aren’t just this writer’s opinion, The Ultimate Underdog says this himself.

“I truly think that once Eddie’s passing happened, that set a lot of direction towards me because of the connection we had and the response from the fans. That was the opportunity that in a way, Eddie gave me to become World Champion and continue with this legacy that I’ve built. If Eddie wouldn’t have passed, things could have been very different. And I truly think that with Eddie’s passing, the next year, the Royal Rumble win and then moving on to WrestleMania and becoming Champion there. There was a connection between all of us and I truly believe that Eddie helped me take that next step to stardom.”

#4 His match against Rey Mysterio

Nothing is more important to a masked wrestler than his mask. When Eddie Guerrero took on Rey Mysterio at WCW Halloween Havoc 1997, Mysterio’s mask on the line. The match was an instant classic and definitely one of the best matches of the night.

Although the match was very predictable, it over exceeded our expectations. At last, Mysterio defeated Guerrero but this match is still one of the highlights of his career.

#3 Defeated Kurt Angle at WrestleMania 20

The night Eddie Guerrero won the WWE Championship, Kurt Angle went on to defeat John Cena and The Big Show in a triple threat match to determine the next challenger. This match happened at WrestleMania and Guerrero won in a typical heel fashion.

When Angle locked him to the ankle lock, Guerrero managed to escape and then loosened his boots. When the Olympic Gold Medalist went on for another ankle lock, the Latino Heat managed disentangled himself and surprisingly won the match with a roll-up pinfall victory. It was his first-ever title defense at the stage of WrestleMania.

#2 Celebrated on Chris Benoit’s victory at WrestleMania 20

On the same night when Eddie Guerrero defeated Kurt Angle to retain his title, his friend Chris Benoit went on to win the World Heavyweight Title in a triple threat match against Triple H and Shawn Michaels. Benoit, the 2004 Royal Rumble winner, made The Game tap out to his submission move. When the match ended, Guerrero entered the ring and congratulated his friend on this huge victory and then celebrated with him.

The Radicalz stablemates hugged each other and this was the most emotional moment of the night. Sadly, WWE no longer acknowledges Benoit’s work and he has been erased completely from the company’s history.

#1 When Eddie Guerrero beat Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship

Brock Lesnar has always been the kind of wrestler that everybody wants to win against but no one actually wants to share the ring with him. Lesnar has always maintained his reputation in WWE. He doesn’t let any superstar get a hold of him, even for a moment. If WWE books someone to beat The Beast, it’s big deal.

Eddie Guerrero managed to beat Lesnar for the WWE Championship at No Way Out in 2004. Earlier, he had won a 15-Man Battle Royal to become the No. 1 contender for the title. But just like WWE never let someone hurt Lesnar’s character, it wasn’t a clean victory for the Latino Heat.

It was Brock Lesnar‘s then-opponent Goldberg who helped Guerrero take the pinfall victory. This was inarguably the greatest moment of Guerrero’s career.
