Victor Wembanyama ends NBA debut on high despite horror start for Spurs against Luka Doncic’s Mavs

Victor Wembanyama made his NBA debut against the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night following his fantastic preseason display. Although the young talent had a decent game, the San Antonio Spurs failed to secure a victory.

The Mavericks led by Luka Doncic won the game. The fiery duo of Luka and Kyrie impressed as promised. The Mavs sensational rookie Dereck Lively performed beautifully and scored more than Wemby. It seems Luca Doncic and Co have succeeded in bringing a smile on the face of their fans by giving the Spurs a horror start.

Victor Wembanyama’s NBA debut highlights

Victor Wembanyama had a pretty decent performance in his NBA debut game. He needs to adjust to the speed of the game for sure but still he had a better debut than many NBA legends. He even blocked one of Kyrie Irving’s shots which is a great achievement for a rookie.

Wembanyama’s range is unquestionable. He has the potential of going into Steph Curry mode and score from downtown whenever he wants to. He shot 3 out of 5 from the perimeter. Some of these shots were from way beyond the arc.

Wembanyama is one of those big men who can shoot well, be it from within the three-point line or from a long range. The young talent shot 15 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assist in just 23 minutes of playtime. The NBA community knew that Wembanyama could shoot threes as per scouting reports and highlights reels before he was drafted. Fans also got a chance to view his perimeter shooting abilities throughout the Summer League and preseason.

Victor Wembanyama, just like all other NBA rookies, committed an awful lot of fouls which slowed him down and allowed him to score just six points in the first three quarters. Rookies struggling with fouls is not something new. It has been going on for years and has even troubled many NBA greats. However, it is an issue which can be easily resolved with more playing time and increased maturity.

Wembanyama shone in the 4th Quarter by scoring nine points. “Lots of emotions for sure,” Wembanyama said after the game, “but it would have been perfect with a win.”

Wembanyama said it was “surreal” to see the number of fans in the building before the opening tip, and he did get things going on the right foot.
