“Messi’s extension is bulls***” Ex-PSG star warns club on handing Argentina’s World Cup winning captain a new deal

Lionel Messi will likely part ways with the Ligue 1 champion after his contract expires at the end of the ongoing season since an extension of the contract seems unlikely as PSG struck under financial fair play regulations.

Lionel Messi joined PSG in 2021 from Barcelona and helped the French club to win the domestic championship, however a Champions League win is what was the desire for both parties, this could be the last year for Messi to deliver the dream trophy to the Parc Des Princes.

Lionel Messi won his third and last UEFA Champions League trophy with Barcelona in the 2010-2011 season. Since then, Messi has come close to winning the Champions League several times but has not been able to lift the trophy again.

As reported by the Mirror via RMC Sports, former PSG player Jerome Rothen is not too much impressed by PSG’s desperation to sign the Argentine and the former winger described the contract as ‘bullshit’.

“Messi’s extension is bulls***, already in terms of numbers. Managing the three is complicated. Afterward, there is the wage bill. And we saw that PSG is stuck with financial fair play. Because the wage bill has exploded”, Jerome Rothen said.

“There, you have the opportunity to recover a large sum of money because Messi’s salary is It can allow you to recruit and improve your squad. For all that, it’s a very bad idea to extend Leo Messi.”- the Frenchman further added.

Jerome Rothen joined PSG in 2000 and went on to make over 200 appearances for the club, helping them win several domestic titles and reach the final of the UEFA Cup in 2004.

“In terms of image and what he reflects, I would not understand that Leo Messi wants to prolong the adventure. He makes no effort to put the club forward. He is not going to thank the fans, he lowers his head and goes to the locker room.” – Rothen explained.

After leaving PSG in 2008, Rothen played for several other clubs in France and Europe before retiring from professional football in 2013.
