Despite defeating Borna Coric in two sets, Carlos Alcaraz unable to prevent Spain’s elimination from Hopman Cup

Wimbledon 2023 winner Carlos Alcaraz defeated Borna Coric in a closely contested match to win, but Spain was ultimately eliminated from the Hopman Cup. Although the game was tough and demonstrated both players’ grit, Spain ultimately fell short of moving on in the competition.

Both players held their serves well in the tightly contested first set. After earning a break point in his favor, Alcaraz was able to gain a key lead of 5-3 and go on to win the set 6-3. Alcaraz initially struggled and dropped his serve in the second set, giving Coric a 2-0 lead. But he promptly struck back, tying the set before reaffirming the break with a solid service game.

 

With the exception of a tight period in the fifth game when Coric saved three break points, both players maintained their serves comfortably throughout the whole set. Despite having a match point, Carlos Alcaraz blew it on his serve in the tiebreak, giving Coric the opportunity to win the set.

A super tiebreak to 10 points was required to determine the winner when the match was deadlocked. Alcaraz demonstrated his skill in this critical tiebreak, winning 10-5 and breaking Coric’s serve five times in eight service points. The teenage tennis player put on an outstanding display of talent and tenacity. Due to the earlier loss of 2-1 to Belgium, the Spanish team had no chance of winning the tournament after this defeat.

Wimbledon champion Alcaraz wins again at Hopman Cup

The rising tennis star Carlos Alcaraz defeated Borna Coric in an intense match to tie the score at 1-1. Just a few days prior to the event, Alcaraz had won an amazing Wimbledon match on grass.

The 20-year-old Alcaraz got off to a fast start, taking just 36 minutes to win the opening set while displaying no symptoms of exhaustion from his last match against David Goffin. Croatia, the 1996 champions, ultimately exhibited remarkable tenacity and maintained their composure to secure a historic comeback triumph.
