Ex-Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo’s alkaline water company URSU9 accused of deceptive marketing tactics

There is probably no other athlete across the globe who is under more spotlight than Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese captain set a tone after his against-the-odds lucrative move to the Saudi club Al-Nassr. Following the 38-year-old’s footsteps, the likes of Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante, Ruben Neves, and Roberto Firmino have all made their journey to the Gulf nation. 

Recently, during his trip to Spain, the Portuguese superstar launched his own alkaline water company URSU9. Just weeks after its launch, CR7’s latest venture was accused of fake marketing tactics where they claimed falsehood and non-existent benefits. Cristiano Ronaldo’s URSU9 under Scrutiny for Misinformation

Much more than water” is the tagline of Ronaldo’s newly launched alkaline water company. However, a report from Spanish newspaper El Comidista has brought to light some false claims made by the company. Due to the location of their base which is at Avila, URSU claims that their product protects from external aggressions and guarantees stable and permanent characteristics without suffering human and chemical contamination.

There is no concrete evidence supporting the superiority of Avila water, though, and several reports suggest that it is of inferior quality.

The promotional campaign put out by the company also turned out to be misleading as the pictures used were actually from Serra do Acor, not the claimed El Oso lagoon in Avila. To make matters worse, Ronaldo’s company also claimed an inaccurate pH level of the water. Based on several tests, the highest pH level of the water inside the bottles reached 8.63, lower than the announced pH level of 9.

There has been no official statement from CR7’s company regarding the false claims made about the water.

When did Cristiano Ronaldo launch his mineral water brand?

There is no denying the fact that Cristiano Ronaldo has been one of the highest-earning athletes over the past decade. In 2021, he made headlines by snubbing Coca-Cola bottles during a press conference, resulting in a significant $4 billion drop in the brand’s market value. Just two years later, Cristiano Ronaldo invested $10 million to launch his mineral water brand, URSU9.  

The Al-Nassr forward utilized his social media accounts to promote and spread awareness about the medical benefits of the URSU9 water. The advertisement campaigns claimed that the water contains special properties like high levels of alkaline, antioxidant, and minerals.

The five-times Ballon d’Or winner is one of the most followed and influential people in the world.
