Frank Lampard future EPL managerial prospect in jeopardy following Chelsea’s disasterous start

Frank Lampard could not have had a worse start to the beginning of his second managerial spell at his longtime club.

Following his sacking in January 2021, the former Chelsea player and coach came back to the club.

Chelsea’s season has devolved into disorder following the firing of Graham Potter. The club has already started its search for its third manager since being purchased by Todd Boehly and his consortium last summer.

Potter had been under fire for some time because performances had been poor despite the current owners investing more than £550 million on new players since taking over the club last May. Just three months ago, they broke the British transfer record by signing midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Benfica for £106.8 million.

Frank Lampard: Is his future in the EPL in jeopardy?

Lampard was brought in as a caretaker manager until the end of the season. But now he has led the team to its worst losing run in 30 years.

When Todd Boehly contacted Frank Lampard, he agreed very quickly. He had hoped that he might be successful enough to gain the Chelsea position permanently a second time. But as of right now, the former England midfielder might have prevented himself from ever again landing a Premier League position.

Wednesday’s loss to Real Madrid became Chelsea’s fourth consecutive defeat under Lampard. The Blues have only managed one goal and one clean sheet in their previous six games combined.

At this point, Lampard’s reputation as a manager is already the lowest it has ever been. He lost all eight of the games he supervised in 2023, including his final four games at Everton before being fired in January.

It is tough to predict where his next position will be if he cannot help Chelsea complete the season on a strong note. Chelsea is currently out of all the cup competitions and just 11th in the Premier League. They have little to no hope of making European football next season.

When Lampard first began managing, Derby was in the Championship, and he came close to promoting them. Many think that in 2019, he was granted the Chelsea position too soon. Despite having relatively little managerial experience, his legendary standing at the club elevated him to a top candidate quicker than any other manager.

What next for Chelsea?

Chelsea is now contemplating appointing either Nagelsmann or Enrique in the summer as their next permanent manager.

According to the German news agency BILD, former Bayern manager Julian Nagelsmann has been invited to personally introduce himself. He will be allowed to express his ideas to the Chelsea executives. Luis Enrique was granted the same opportunity a little over three weeks ago and is said to have made a positive impression.

There have also been reports that the Blues are arranging an ‘imminent deal’ with the Spaniard. But they will first meet with Nagelsmann before any decisions. There is much confidence that the German coach will be the ideal man to lead the Blues to glory.

Chelsea will next face Brentford at Stamford Bridge next Wednesday. They will hope to grab some points to end their season on a good note.
