Lions welcome ex-Kansas State QB Adrian Martinez to roster after he was overlooked in NFL Draft

The Detroit Lions brought another quarterback Adrian Martinez to their team after he had gone undrafted in 2023 NFL draft and with him, the lions now have four options in that role.

During his first four years of college, Martinez played for Nebraska. During his time with the Cornhuskers, he participated in 39 games and amassed 45 passing scores and 35 rushing touchdowns.

Martinez made the decision to transfer to Kansas State for the 2022 season since he still had one year of eligibility available. Until he sustained a lower-body injury during the conference victory over Baylor for Kansas State in November, he served as the offensive focal point for the Wildcats.

He was back in action when the Wildcats faced Alabama in the 2022 Sugar Bowl, but Will Howard ultimately started at quarterback for the Big 12 team.

How good is Adrian Martinez?

Prior to the 2023 NFL Draft, Martinez planned top-30 visits with several organizations, including the Lions. Martinez has at least found a place in the NFL even though he did not hear his name called during the 2023 NFL Draft. The adaptable quarterback has the option to focus on the USFL, though, since the New Jersey Generals selected him in the second round of the USFL Draft in February.

In the 10 games he participated in for Kansas State last year, Martinez completed 64.1 percent of his throws for 1,261 yards, six touchdowns, and one interception. He also ran for 627 yards and 10 scores on 111 attempts.

He has a strong arm and a creative passing style, but his timing and ball placement are inconsistent. This is frequently the result of his hazy eyesight and inability to make timely decisions. Overall, Martinez has the strength and athletic attributes to attract the attention of NFL teams, but he still needs to improve his consistency as a passer.
