The Mexican wrestling world is heartbroken after losing Miguel Ángel López Días, known as Rey Misterio Sr. He was a Lucha Libre legend and a well-loved trainer.
Rey Misterio Sr was the uncle of WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio, who just celebrated his 50th birthday a few days ago. His death came as a shock since there were no reports of him being sick.
Misterio’s son, Miguel Aarón López Hernández, shared the sad news on Instagram. He wrote,”Friends and family, I’m sad to share that my father, Miguel Ángel López Días, Rey Misterio Sr., passed away this morning… more updates to come. Thank you.”
According to Sam Palmer of Wrestling Inc., Rey Misterio Sr. started wrestling in 1976 and quickly became a big name in Lucha Libre. He won championship titles with organizations like Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, known as Mexico’s version of WWE.
After 2009, he wrestled less often and only appeared for special events, with his final match happening in April 2023. Rey Mysterio Sr. was also a well-known trainer. He trained Dominik Mysterio, his grand-nephew, who is 27 years old and competes in The Judgment Day series after winning the NXT North America Championship twice.
However, the cause of Rey Misterio Sr.’s death is not yet known, and it comes just a week after his brother, Robert Gutierrez, passed away at 76.
