NFL Draft 2023: Chiefs’ snapup Oklahoma tackle Wanya Morris from bitter rivals Bengals

Oklahoma Sooners football team star Wanya Morris has found his landing spot after the Kansas City Chiefs picked him in the third round overall, 92nd overall, in the 2023 NFL draft.

The Chiefs have been in a comfortable spot after winning the Super Bowl with a competitively healthy young team, and the draft offered them only a chance to strengthen their roster. In doing so, they acquire one of the desired desensitizing traits.

How did the Chiefs acquire Wanya Morris?

In exchange for the Bengals moving up three positions to pick No. 92, the Chiefs sent picks No. 95 and 217. After moving up in the second round earlier, the team has now made a second deal.

“I’m going to play wherever they need me to play,” Morris said. “I can’t tell you how excited I am at this moment. Whatever they need me to play, I’m going to play it. I’m glad I’m a Chief.”

As a 12-game starter at left tackle for Tennessee in 2019, Morris, a five-star recruit, made the SEC All-Freshman Team. In 2020, he started seven of the nine games (five at left tackle and two as a blocking tight end).

Following UT’s dismissal of head coach Jeremy Pruitt, he transferred to Oklahoma for the 2021 season. Despite missing time due to a shoulder injury in 2022, Morris started eight of nine games at right tackle for the Sooners in 2021 as a reserve. In 2021, Morris participated in six games as a starter for the Sooners.

He decided not to play in the team’s bowl game in order to get ready for the draft. Morris is not related to Boyz II Men’s Morris, despite the name being the same.

Last year, when the Chiefs won the Super Bowl, two Sooners were among their starting five. Morris will have the chance to line up alongside Humphrey, the Chiefs’ Pro Bowl center who is entering his third season with the team.
