Oleksandr Bordiuh – A Coach from Ukraine Who Creates Champions

In 2024, American wrestler Stefan Matt became a three-time national champion, winning gold at the Rocky Mountain Nationals, Freakshow Nationals, and CAGWA California Nationals.

Behind these victories lies not only the athlete’s talent and perseverance but also a well-structured approach to physical preparation. One of the key factors in Stefan’s success was incorporating explosive strength training and endurance work into his overall training process. This area is led by Oleksandr Bordiuh, a coach from Ukraine, who helped Stefan elevate his physical performance to a new level. We spoke with Oleksandr about his methods, training philosophies, and personal journey in the world of sports.

Interview with Oleksandr Bordiuh

– Oleksandr, what aspects of physical training were key to Stefan’s success?

“We focused on three key components:

Explosive strength – enables powerful and quick attacks, throws, and control over the opponent.
Functional endurance – a wrestler must maintain a high pace throughout the match.
Speed and coordination – essential for lightning-fast reactions and movement on the mat.

We incorporated elements of Olympic weightlifting, plyometrics, resistance training, and specific core stabilization exercises.”*

– What does a wrestler’s training look like off the mat?

“We adapted my Peak Explosive Training (PET) methodology, which has proven effective in various sports, to fit the needs of wrestling. The program includes several key areas:

Strength training – fundamental exercises (squats, deadlifts, bench press) to build raw power.
Plyometrics and speed work – jump training, explosive presses, sprints.
Endurance training – interval workouts, circuit training.
Flexibility and mobility – exercises to prevent injuries and improve range of motion.”*

– Why is explosive strength training so crucial for a wrestler?

“Wrestling isn’t just about raw power—it’s about the ability to instantly engage, change tempo, and maintain strength throughout the match. That’s why our methodology includes exercises that mimic wrestling movements and develop sport-specific strength and speed.”

– How did you become a coach? What led you to this profession?

“I have always been passionate about sports. Since childhood, I’ve tried various disciplines, but strength sports were closest to my heart. I competed in powerlifting and achieved significant national-level results. But over time, I realized that I wasn’t just interested in training myself—I wanted to help others become stronger, faster, and better. That’s what led me to coaching.”

– What are the core principles behind your coaching philosophy?

*“The first and most important principle is an individual approach. Every athlete has their own strengths and weaknesses, and a coach’s job is to identify them and structure training in a way that maximizes their potential.

The second is a scientific approach. I continuously study new methodologies, analyze research, and test new techniques. Sports are constantly evolving, and a coach must keep up with the times.

The third is discipline. Training must be systematic and well-planned, not chaotic. Only through structured and consistent work can you achieve lasting results.”*

– What kind of athletes have you worked with?

“I have worked with both beginners and elite athletes, including Ukrainian champions in powerlifting, strongman, and other explosive strength sports. Now, in the U.S., I continue working with wrestlers, weightlifters, and other athletes, helping them enhance their physical abilities.”

– What are your future plans?

“Our goal is to continue improving Stefan’s physical preparation and helping other athletes reach their peak performance. The higher the level of competition, the more details matter. We will refine our methodology and prepare for new challenges.”

– What advice would you give to young athletes who aspire to become champions?

“The key is patience, discipline, and a constant desire for growth. Learn to listen to your body, recover properly, and never be afraid of hard work. And, of course, it’s crucial to find a knowledgeable coach who can guide you on the right path to success.”

Conclusion

Oleksandr Bordiuh is a coach from Ukraine dedicated to helping athletes unlock their physical potential and compete at the highest level. His approach combines modern scientific methods with practical experience, allowing athletes like Stefan Matt to become champions. And this is just the beginning.
