Tarris Reed Jr’s latest NCAA transfer portal decision surely hurts Michigan basketball

As college basketball is at its peak during this time, the NCAA transfer portal has been officially opened. The portal’s validity is for 45 days, until May 1st, which will change the course of college basketball with many twists and turns in the roster.

Many players have registered their names in the portal for transfers across different institutes, and the latest addition is Michigan Wolverines’ Tarris Reed Jr, which came as a bump for the Michigan fans as he’s the third player on the team to request a transfer.

Tarris Reed Jr enters NCAA transfer portal

The Michigan Wolverines have suffered a major setback since Juwan Howard, the head coach, was fired on March 15. The young guard, George Washington III, was the first one, followed by Dug McDaniel, and now the star centre, Tarris Reed Jr. has signed up for a transfer.

The 6ft 10 weighing 267 lbs has played two seasons with the Wolverines and is eligible for two more. Reed started in 31 out of the 32 games he played in the 2023–24 season and finished with a record of 8–24. He averaged 9 points per game with 7.2 rebounds and 1.4 blocks, shooting 52.1% from the field.

Michigan basketball loses another player before 2024–25

Michigan has lost four players within a week to the transfer portal and Khani Rooths’ taking back his commitment, and there are now only five scholarship players remaining to make their return in the 2024–25 season. The new head coach has the responsibility of filling up seven open scholarship spots before the new season begins.

The Michigan Wolverines’ roster features a mix of experienced players and promising talents. Among them are Jace Howard, a seasoned guard, Nimari Burnett, a versatile combo guard with two years of eligibility left, Will Tschetter, a valuable sixth-man, Youssef Khayat, a skilled forward, and Terrance Williams II, a veteran forward entering his final year. The status of these players’ future remains uncertain as the team is currently without a head coach. Their decisions will be made once a new coach is in place.

For the upcoming year, a few players have shown interest, like guards Durral Brooks and Christian Anderson, but will wait to see who the new head coach turns out to be before fully committing to the team.
