Throwback 2017: Randy Orton’s bold banter challenges Conor McGregor – teasing a WWE Cruiserweight Clash with weighty humor

In 2017, Conor McGregor made headlines when the UFC fighter dissed the entire WWE universe, claiming that he would slap the heads off every superstar in the company.

Former WWE champion Randy Orton responded to McGregor’s tweet, stating that he would be glad to put him down, but only if Conor added some weight to his skinny body, as fighting a cruiserweight like McGregor would be beneath ‘The Viper’.

Orton’s History in Cross-Sport Confrontations

The last time Orton went toe-to-toe with a MMA and UFC fighter he ended up making a bloody mess. The Viper had a bout with ‘The beast Incarnate’ Brock Lesnar at 2016 SummerSlam and ended up in stitches. Randy had to get a number of stiches in his head after it was cut open by Lesnar.

Lesnar joined the UFC in 2007, and over time, he acquired all the necessary skills to compete in the organization. It was no surprise for the WWE universe when Brock used those moves on Randy, as he became one of the most recognized names in the UFC industry and a dominant champion during his tenure there.

Orton’s Unique Stipulations for a McGregor Showdown

Randy Orton in 2017 went on to WrestleMania 33 where he beat Bray Wyatt to capture the WWE Championship. McGregor, on the other hand, became the first fighter to hold two UFC belts simultaneously. Their bout on Twitter/X even made headlines in news.

In a 2016 post on Twitter/X, McGregor shared his opinion for the WWE wrestlers, he said, “I didn’t mean no disrespect to the @wwe fans. What I meant to say was that I’d slap the head off your entire roster. And twice on Sunday’s”.

WWE heavyweight champion Randy Orton later added his name to the list of people who wanted to fight Conor due to the UFC disrespecting the WWE. In 2017, a fan asked Orton if he can beat Conor, if the said UFC star ever joined WWE. Randy added, “If he gains 120lbs im here. Until then, #205Live bro.”

Since then things have changed quite a bit for Conor, but the same can’t really be said for Orton. The legend killer Orton is still one of the biggest name in WWE universe and fans still demand his presence inside the ring. Randy has evolved during this six years. WWE is not even the same anymore as they officially merged with UFC.

McGregor, however, has endured a string of personal issues as well as big defeats in both boxing and MMA. The Notorious has not fought in the UFC since July 2021, and it looks like his eventual comeback is going to have to wait until summer of 2024.

Fans hope to see both fighters one day face each other inside the ring, as the potential possibilities of McGregor facing Orton is not zero.
