Throwback: When Mexico stunned Neymar Jr., Oscar, Hulk, and Thiago Silva’s Brazil at the Olympics

Brazil has always been the country to produce outstanding players with the likes of Neymar Jr., Ronaldinho, and Vinicius Junior, already on that list. Brazil’s national team is full of stars with Neymar, Vinicius, Rodrygo, Thiago Silva, and others sitting comfortably in their starting lineup which just shows the level of talent the squad has.

Brazil’s national team has won the most number of world cups in history and is considered one of the best countries in terms of pure football brilliance and talent, but there is still a dark spot in their history and they will remain devastated for years to come for letting it spoil their glorious history.

Mexico once pulled a massive upset over Brazil

Going back to the 2012 London Olympics, the tournament had no real surprises except a massive one in the final. As usual, due to the immense talent in the Brazilian squad with the likes of Thiago Silva, Marcelo, Alex Sandro, Hulk, Lucas, Oscar, and Neymar included, the national team was considered the big favorites to win the Olympics that year and the team was delivering as per expectations until they met Mexico in the final.

Fans and analysts alike had Brazil pegged as a heavy favorite to defeat Mexico in the final, but the national team wasn’t able to carry over its strong play from the regular season. Meanwhile, Mexico, riding on the exploits of youngster Giovani Dos Santos throughout the campaign and in the final, was determined to capture the gold medal at the Olympics.

Due to such determination and a good coach, the Mexico national team was able to defeat Brazil 2-1 in the final on the back of a memorable performance from Giovani Dos Santos and pull a massive upset over Brazil, which is still remembered and cherished by all the fans in the world, especially Mexican fans.

Brazil fail to reach Paris Olympics

Coming back to 2024, from being runners-up in the 2012 London Olympics to not even qualifying for the Paris Olympics 2024, the Brazil National team has fallen beyond grace and it could take a lot of time for them to recover considering the arrival of the new coach Dorival Junior.

The recent controversies regarding Anthony’s reported domestic abuse and Dani Alves’ accused sexual abuse in a nightclub in Barcelona. These devastating controversies coupled with their poor performances in the World Cup qualifying due to the injury crisis have forced them far down the pecking order and the team is not even considered favorites to win Copa America 2024 as well.

The Brazil National team might have got their potential solutions for the future in the upcoming Brazilian young talents in the likes of Endrick, recently signed by Real Madrid, Vitor Roque, recently signed by FC Barcelona, Savinho, recently signed by Manchester City and others. But these youngsters must be handled well and should be given opportunities to grow as much as they can, only then any chances of the revival of the best national team in history could be considered.

Do you think Brazil’s National team could come back from such scenarios and is newly-appointed coach Dorival Junior the right man to do so? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
