Tom Brady files retirement papers to NFL Players Association causing Bucs to take $35M cap hit

Tom Brady last week on Wednesday famously announced his retirement for the second time in consecutive years. TB12 filled out his retirement paperwork to the NFL and the NFL Players Association this Friday.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are in serious trouble with their salary cap after the NFL GOAT made his retirement official with all the paperwork. Not only do the Bucs have to find a new quarterback for the team, but they also have to take a huge hit cap hit.

If Brady retired on the 1st of June, they might not have had to deal with such issues. However, with Tom Brady retiring in February, the Bucs now find themselves in a situation where they are taking a massive  $35 million cap hit.

What is the total amount of cap hit the Buccaneers are taking after the retirement of Tom Brady?

Tom Brady’s retirement gives the Tampa Bay team a 15.43% cap hit. While they also have other hits as well. If Brady retired in June, they could have divided the dead cap hit between 2023 and 2024.

However, now that Brady has retired, they must proceed with nearly $60 million over their initial salary cap. The salary cap for 2023 is $224.8 million per team.

However, the Bucs are over their usual limits and stand on a salary cap of $285,469,039. Doing the math, the number is close to $60 million. With such a huge amount hanging on their shoulder, the Tampa Bay team are in all sorts of trouble.

Moreover, they look miserable with no TB12 in the team next season. Tom Brady playing three years in the team, did manage to win them a Super Bowl and led the team to two playoff situations.

With such uncertainties and cap hit, the Buccaneers might not perform their best next season. However, they will look to give it their all.

How far can the Tampa Bay team go next year? What are your thoughts on the matter? You can share your opinion in the comments.

  1. THE TEAM WILL JUST HAVE TO PULL TOGETHER AS WHOLE TEAM AND NOT SCREW UP AND WE HAVE ALOT OF GOOD MEN AND WE JUST HAVE TO HAVE FAITH IN THEM AND THEY CAN DO IT WITHOUT TOM BRADY,ITS SAD TO SEE HIM RETIRED BUT HE’S GETTING OLDER AND ITS TIME FOR HIM TO ENJOY HIS LIFE

  2. It was very selfish of Tom Brady to retire prior to June 1st. He had to be aware that move would create a difficult salary cap dilemma for the Bucs. I guess he wants the team to suffer since he doesn’t need them now. Unbelievable!!
