Transfer Rumor: Real Madrid Allegedly Signing Raheem Sterling Following Kylian Mbappe’s Last-Minute Snub

Real Madrid have targeted Raheem Sterling after after they were snubbed by PSG and France talisman Kylian Mbappe.

One of the most talked about transfer narratives in the recent windows is that Kylian Mbappe will be moving to Real Madrid. It wasn’t a question of “If”, rather a question of “When”. But such predictions don’t always come to fruition as Mbappe penned a contract extension at the Parc de Princes until 2025.

Real Madrid are dejected by such ending, as the player himself had expressed significant desire to join the Los Blancos. But things haven’t quite worked out as planned, and Real Madrid will be looking elsewhere to replenish their squad.

One such name on their radar is Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling. The Mercurial winger joined Manchester City from Liverpool in 2015 for £49 million. This was the  highest transfer fee ever paid for an English player at the time.

Sterling has won numerous honors during his time at the Etihad. With 4 League Titles already under his belt, Sterling has a ton of experience when it comes to showing up for big occasions. Still only 27, the former Queens Park Rangers man will not only add experience, but also a ton of quality in the attacking third.

Sterling did not have the best of starts to the season. With the arrival of Jack Grealish, his place was under doubt. He was linked with a move away from Manchester, with reports strongly linking him to Barcelona. But since then, he has come back strongly. In 30 league games, he has scored 13 times, and assisted 5 more.

Long Time Admirers

Real Madrid have been long-time admirers of the England and Manchester City ace and will look to lure him to the Bernabeu. Sterling is entering the final 12 months of his £350,000-a-week deal at the Etihad and there are no signs of him being offered a new one. Sterling, too, has expressed his desire multiple times to try out a foreign league. In 2020, he expressed his admiration for Real Madrid as well. He even posed with one of their famous shirts draped over his shoulder.

Why Does Raheem Sterling Needs The Move?

Even though he had a strong second half to the season, Sterling’s place in Pep Guardiola’s side is not guaranteed. He wants to play regularly as he plans to become a part of Gareth Southgate’s squad in the upcoming World Cup. A move to Real Madrid might just be what he needs to stamp his ticket to Qatar. He was one of the star performers at Euro 2020.  But his performances were not enough as England bowed out in the finals. Sterling will be hoping to help England go one step further in Qatar.
