The CONCACAF Nations League is a soccer competition for senior men’s national teams of member associations in North America. The tournament is organized by CONCACAF, the regional governing body. Some of the biggest soccer-playing nations, like the USA, Mexico, and Costa Rica, compete in this tournament.
In the ongoing 3rd edition of the CONCACAF Nations League, the USA, being the most successful nation of the tournament, was on the move to clinch their third title in a row. However, some discriminatory chants by Mexican fans interrupted the match as a cameo. Amidst those distracting noises, the US National team was still able to clinch their third consecutive title.
USA beat Mexico to win Concacaf trophy
The United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) boasts some of the most promising young players in the world of soccer. In the final match of the CONCACAF Nations League against Mexico, two of these young stars, Tyler Adams and Gio Reyna, stepped up and delivered when it mattered most.
Both players scored the match-winning goals, helping the USMNT secure a 2-0 victory and their third CONCACAF Nations League title.
In the post-match interviews, the players and coach of the USMNT spoke on their victory.
“Winning titles for your country never gets old. I’ll never take any of them for granted,” said Gio Reyna. “I always love coming to camp because of the group of guys and the energy we have. I’m at a loss for words right now.”
Reyna hopes the “Three-peat” will inspire the team to compete in Copa America, which will be held this summer on home soil against South America’s top teams.
“It’s big for momentum,” he said. “We’ve been together as a core group now. We know what it takes to win big matches. Hopefully, we can keep the momentum going into Copa America and maybe lift a trophy there.”
“Our goal for this whole tournament was to advance and then get a chance to play in the final and win the final, and we achieved it,” told US coach Gregg Berhalter.
Why was USA vs Mexico games stopped?
As the match was about to reach its last minute, a group of Mexican fans began directing discriminatory chants towards the USMNT following Mexico’s concession of both goals. This unsportsmanlike conduct caused a brief interruption in the game, prompting officials to take necessary action.
In response to the incident, CONCACAF released a statement condemning such behavior and calling for stricter measures to be taken against fans who engage in discriminatory conduct.
This tournament showcased the USMNT’s dominance among CONCACAF nations. With this form, fans will hope they win their first Copa America title.
