“We Don’t Win Those Games without Him” – JJ Redick Breaks Down How D’Angelo Russell’s Absence Affects Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers traded D’Angelo Russell to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for Dorian Finney-Smith. The Lakers played their first game without him on New Year’s Eve.

Although Russell had some struggles during the 2024–25 season, JJ Redick still recognized his importance to the team. Before the Lakers’ game against the Cavs on Tuesday, Redick shared his honest thoughts on how Russell’s absence would impact the team.

JJ Redick spoke about missing D’Angelo Russell after the trade, saying, “I spent more time with that guy and on the phone this summer, on the golf course. I told him many times that I want a great outcome for him, and I’m hoping he has a great rest of the year.”

Redick admitted the Lakers would miss Russell’s playmaking, ball handling, and shooting, adding, “We’re gonna miss a lot from DLo.” When asked how the team would adjust, Redick explained that players like Austin Reaves, LeBron James, and Anthony Davis would take on more playmaking duties, especially in non-starting lineups.

With Russell gone, the team’s stars now share the responsibility he handled, particularly off the bench.

D’Angelo Russell picks his jersey number for Nets return

D’Angelo Russell has picked his jersey number for his return to the Brooklyn Nets. After being traded from the Lakers, many wondered what number he would choose.

Now it’s official—Russell will wear No. 1 for the Nets. Ziaire Williams last wore this number in 2024. Fans will remember that Russell also wore No. 1 during his first time with the Nets, so it feels just right.
