Who is Goncalo Ramos? Looking at PSG’s potential $87M replacement for Kylian Mbbape

A star player like Kylian Mbappe is next to impossible to replace. Mbappe’s blistering pace, creativity, skill, and excellent finishing technique make him a great fit for the center-forward and left-wing positions.

The 24-year-old top striker has made it clear to the club that he does not wish to sign a new contract. Paris Saint Germain are now faced with the dilemma of procuring a replacement for Mbappe before the end of the transfer window. They have been linked to Rasmus Hojlund, Goncalo Ramos, and Randall Kolo Muani, amongst others.

Who is Goncalo Ramos?

It was not before the 2022 World Cup that football spectators around the world began to wonder who Goncalo Ramos was. The spotlight was on Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo at the “Biggest Event on Earth”. However, Portugal could not proceed onto the most crucial stages as the aging Cristiano Ronaldo was not as helpful and always.

Goncalo Ramos

Goncalo Ramos barely participated in the competition’s group stage, but he went on to bag a hat trick for Portugal against Switzerland in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Goncalo Ramos shone out of nowhere in a team well-stocked with excellent attackers like Cristiano Ronaldo, Joao Felix, Rafael Leao, and Andre Silva.

His performance in the World Cup round of 16 made him a regular starter going forward, with Cristiano Ronaldo dropped to the bench.

Goncalo Ramos also plays as a center-forward for Primeira Liga club Benfica. Born in Ohlhao, Ramos came through Benfica’s youth academy. He began playing for Benfica B in 2019 and was promoted to the first team a year later. In the 2022/23 season, the 21-year-old Portuguese forward scored 27 goals. 19 in the league, 7 in the Champions League, and 1 in the Portuguese League Cup.

PSG reportedly offer $87M for Goncalo Ramos to replace Kylian Mbappe

After reaching a stalemate in pursuing Rasmus Hojlund, PSG has to look elsewhere for a forward that may fill Kylian Mbappe’s void. In the past week, the club launched a £50 million for the Atalanta striker, but Hojlund clarified that Manchester United was his preferred club.

PSG explored other alternatives in Harry Kane, Victor Osimhen, and Dušan Vlahović, but they soon discovered that a deal for any of those players would be difficult, if not impossible.

The club is reportedly closing in on signing Goncalo Ramos, as the deal may be completed this week. PSG has already offered $87M for the player to replace Kylian Mbappe. According to Fabrizio Romano, Ramos has agreed on personal terms with the club and is willing to sign the contract that keeps him at the club till June 2028.

The Italian journalist adds that the “final details are being sorted” and claims that “the deal could be completed this week.”
