49ers HC Kyle Shanahan evaluates team’s possible interest in Lamar Jackson for upcoming NFL season

The Baltimore Ravens star quarterback Lamar Jackson has been on the ‘non-exclusive franchise tag’ after he refused to sign a contract extension deal that he was offered by the franchise.

The tag allows him to negotiate with other franchises for the better deal he’s been looking for for quite some time now. However, neither the Ravens nor any other franchise was interested in making him an offer. For now, his future seems uncertain in such a volatile situation.

The San Francisco 49ers head coach, Kyle Shanahan, was also asked about Lamar, but he couldn’t share anything too exciting.

What did Kyle Shanahan say about Lamar Jackson?

Several teams have expressed their interest in the 26-year-old quarterback, but they haven’t come forward with any intention to actually acquire him. The 49ers head coach, although hadn’t thought about him, appears to have a quality option for that position.

“I’m not allowed to talk about players on other rosters. Everyone knows Lamar’s skill set. Lamar’s a stud,” Niners HC said. “I’m sure they’ll work it out there. But Lamar’s a great player.”

While asked about their lack of interest in the 2019 MVP, Shanahan said, “We’ve got three quarterbacks we’re pretty good with right now, and we’re pretty set with how we’ve built our roster salary cap-wise.”

The 43-year-old coach seemed reluctant to comment on the Ravens quarterback as they didn’t show any interest in the two-time pro bowler. The 49ers already have Brock Purdy and Trey Lancer-like talent on their roster.

Moreover, the team increased its depth by signing Sam Darnold from the Carolina Panthers to fill the gap Jimmy Garoppolo left behind. It seems the 49ers are content with the options they have, and there’s no logical reason to pursue another star player like Jackson.

The Heisman trophy winner initially wanted a deal worth more than Deshaun Watson got from Cleveland Brown, but his recent form has been plagued by injury and inconsistency. The Ravens offered him a guaranteed $133 million over three years, but he turned it down.

Should Lamar Jackson sign the deal he got from the Ravens? Do you think he became greedy? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
