Arsenal is aiming to break a record set by the legendary ‘Invincibles’ team of 2003-04. This comes as Mikel Arteta’s men win another game to continue their title race.
Arsenal resumed their dominant charge toward the Premier League title on Saturday. They started the season’s final segment following the international break. The Gunners welcomed Leeds United to the Emirates Stadium, hoping to add to their total of victories.
Mikel Arteta’s side needed 35 minutes to open the scoring, with Gabriel Jesus netting a penalty. It was his first appearance since November, after returning from a severe knee injury. Ben White doubled the lead soon after halftime before Jesus scored again to gain a complete charge of the match.
The visitors’ Rasmus Kristensen pulled one back, but Granit Xhaka’s late effort restored the three-goal advantage and guaranteed the host team claimed all three points. Arsenal now leads the Premier League by eight points, having played a game more than opponents Manchester City.
What is the ‘Invincibles’ record that Arsenal is looking to break?
Arsenal’s victory was their 23rd in the Premier League this season, out of a potential 29 so far. This demonstrates their strong start to the season. With nine games left, the emphasis will be on winning the league title. But records appear ready to fall, including one that has stood for nearly 20 years.
That is the win record established by the “Invincibles” squad of 2003/04, who remained undefeated for the entire season, winning 26 games in the league. The ‘Invincibles’ are widely regarded as one of the best Premier League teams of all time if not the best. They held a 49-game unbeaten streak under Arsene Wenger and had world-class star players like Thierry Henry, Patrick Viera, and Dennis Bergkamp.
The current team is only three victories away from that, with nine games left, and their current form suggests they could demolish that and continue on their path to the title.
Manager Mikel Arteta spoke about the title race after the game, “What we can control is what we can do. We’ve been discussing that for the past few days. After the international break, there were a lot of tricky situations to manage with a few players.”
“There’s always a question about how the players will react after that. I think they were exceptional, they were really at it, everybody wanted to be involved and we won the game in a convincing way which is good and the only thing that we can control.”
Arsenal next face Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday. They will hope to get a win to continue their title race.
