Bucs GM drops truth bomb on post-Tom Brady era QB competition despite praising “fantastic” Baker Mayfield

The post-Tom Brady era has begun for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the team’s search for a new franchise quarterback is well underway. While Baker Mayfield seems to be the favorite, Bucs general manager Jason Licht has made it clear that he won’t be handed the starting job on a silver platter. In a recent interview, Licht dropped a truth bomb about the ongoing quarterback competition that may surprise some fans.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are transitioning to a new era after the retirement of their star quarterback, Tom Brady. They are now looking to former No. 1 pick Baker Mayfield as their potential new starting quarterback. Mayfield signed a one-year, $4 million deal with the Buccaneers in the offseason, which serves as a chance for him to revive his career.

Buccaneers’ general manager, Jason Licht, has been impressed with Mayfield’s performance so far and his ability to adapt to the team’s culture.

“Baker’s been fantastic here getting adjusted to his teammates and the culture here,” Licht said via Joebucsfan.com in a Sirius XM Radio appearance.

What did the Bucs GM say about Baker Mayfield?

Baker Mayfield

The Bucs GM also mentioned that third-year quarterback Kyle Trask will compete with Mayfield for the starting job, and it will be an interesting competition throughout training camp. Despite Trask’s lack of experience, Mayfield’s job is not guaranteed, and he will have to work hard to secure his spot as the starting quarterback for the Buccaneers.

“Kyle (Trask) is just the Steady Eddie. He works very hard. He’s very smart. Nothing seems to rattle Kyle. And that goes all the way back to his high school days waiting for his opportunity and then thriving when it comes up.”

He further added, “So this is going to be a really, really, interesting competition all the way through training camp. Because it truly is going to be a competition. And I know that they’re both very excited to get this thing going.”

As the Bucs head into training camp, all eyes will be on the quarterback battle between Mayfield and Trask. While Mayfield has impressed the Bucs coaching staff, it’s clear that the team is looking for the best quarterback to lead them into a new era.

The truth bomb dropped by Licht has only added to the intrigue of the competition, and it remains to be seen who will emerge as the Bucs’ starting quarterback. One thing is certain, however – the post-Tom Brady era in Tampa Bay is going to be an exciting one.
