Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs hopes for long-term stay with franchise entering final year of his NFL contract: “Hopefully something gets figured out”

After leading the Dallas Cowboys defense over the last few seasons, cornerback Trevon Diggs is entering the final year of his NFL contract and is hoping to get locked down with the franchise with an extended deal.

The Cowboys’ wide receiver CeeDee Lamb is also set to become a free agent soon, albeit they exercised the fifth-year option on Lamb’s contract for 2024, hence, it has become a crucial factor for the team to address the need for Diggs, one of the key anchors of their defense.

The team’s executive vice president Stephen Jones recently addressed the extension rumor of Lamb and Diggs saying it will gain momentum once the draft buzz of the league settles down and ensured these two veteran players are placed on their radar.

“As we move forward that’ll become a bigger priority here as we move past the draft,” Jones said. “We’ve historically signed a lot of guys during that training camp period to extensions. But guys like CeeDee Lamb and Diggs are certainly on our radar”, Jones said to the hosts on 105.3 The Fan.

What did Trevon Diggs say about his extension deal with the Cowboys?

Trevon Diggs, the second-round pick for Dallas in 2020, opened up to the reporters on Wednesday saying he loves Dallas and is hoping for a long-term deal with the franchise.

“Hopefully something gets figured out. I love Dallas. I love being here. We’ll see,” the former Oklahoma Sooners star said to Jon Machota of The Athletic in regard to a long-term contract.

The 24-year-old is going into the fourth year of his four-year, $6.32 million contract and is set to earn $4.8 million in 2023 before hitting free agency in 2024, however, the Cowboys can use the franchise tag on him after the upcoming season to keep him in their arsenal.

Trevon holds two Pro Bowls under his belt after racking up 195 tackles and 17 interceptions over his three-year tenure in Dallas.

The two-time Pro Bowler led the NFL with 11 interceptions and two return touchdowns in 2021 and recorded three interceptions and 14 pass breakups in 2022.
