Commanders aim to heal QB woes with Jacoby Brissett, Tim DeMorat and Sam Howell following disappointing Carson Wentz tenure

The Washington Commanders are trying in full swing to have a tight-knit quarterback room with Jacoby Brissett, Tim DeMorat, and Sam Howell after cutting loose their seasoned quarterback Carson Wentz.

Wentz started for Washington in 2022 and had a record of 2-5, 1,755 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions, was released by the team in February. Late in the season, the QB’s own performance led to his benching in favor of Taylor Heinecke.

Who are in the Commander’s quarterback room?

The commanders already have second-year quarterback Howell, the first quarterback selected by Washington since Dwayne Haskins Jr. in 2019. Sam started that final game for the Commanders and, with a solid performance as a rookie, guided Washington to a thrilling home victory over the Cowboys.

With the recent signing of Jacoby Brissett, the Commanders have further strengthened the veteran leadership in their quarterback room. With 48 career starts, it is anticipated that Brissett will bring a wealth of expertise to the Commanders’ starting quarterback room. It’s challenging for Howell, though, as the QB will be driven for his position as starting quarterback.

However, Howell does not appear to have left his position as the starting quarterback as quickly as the Commanders’ star because it was his dream to win the starting job he appeared to be destined to win just two years prior.

“That’s what I’ve been trying to do ever since I got here is get into this opportunity. I’m definitely going to try to do everything I can to take advantage of it,” he told in an interview.

The Commanders did not select a quarterback in the 2023 NFL Draft, but they later reversed course and signed Tim DeMorat, a former quarterback for Fordham and Viera High School.

DeMorat participated in 48 games over five seasons at Fordham and was named the Patriot League’s offensive player of the week nine times in 2022. The young quarterback set school and Patriot League records for the number of passing touchdowns in a season and career (123) as well as the number of passing yards in a season (4,891) by passing for 56 touchdowns in one season.

Clearly, the Washington team now has a tough and solid quarterback room, even though their choice for the starting quarterback is in doubt given the presence of Brissett and Howell in this room.
