David Beckham takes “Tough decision” to fire former teammate Phil Neville following Inter Miami hit rock bottom

David Beckham’s Inter Miami announced on Thursday that they had fired Phil Neville, a former Manchester United and England star.

Beckham, who is one of the co-owners of Inter Miami, alongside brothers Jorge and Jose Mas, had to sack his former Manchester United teammate after the club hit rock bottom this season.

Although Neville had managed the England women’s national team for three years prior to his appointment in 2021, this position was his first in the men’s game. He led Inter Miami to the MLS Cup playoffs in 2022, and the club claims that he has advanced the careers of several players from the youth academy.

“He and his family embraced Miami and he has devoted himself to the drive to bring success to the city and to our fans.

“Phil has made a real contribution to the culture of our club with his qualities as a leader and knowledge as a coach. Sometimes in this game we have to make the toughest decisions and sadly we feel the time is right to make a change. I want to personally thank Phil for his hard work, his passion for our club and for his integrity as a person.”

Inter Miami suffers 10th defeat of the season sitting at bottom of the table

After Thursday’s 1-0 loss to the New York Red Bulls in Miami, Inter Miami dropped to last place in the Eastern Conference of Major League Soccer. Miami has a 5-10 record after 15 games this season.

Phil Neville fell out with fans following son Harvey gets booed

On Wednesday night, after his son Harvey was booed by Inter Miami fans when he came on as a substitute in a 1-0 loss to the New York Red Bulls, Phil Neville fired back at the crowd. After yet another loss this season, Inter Miami supporters turned on their coach and demanded his dismissal with signs.

‘If you’re unhappy, hit the manager. Don’t go for one of my young kids. That hurts, and that’s personal,’ said Neville about the incident.

It is quite possible that the sacking came following the fallout. Inter Miami announced that assistant coach Jason Kreis has resigned as well and that his colleague Javier Morales will serve as interim head coach in the meantime.
