Days after VAR’s controversial denial of Al-Nassr’s goal, Cristiano Ronaldo’s game gets a new face in the referee’s role

Cristiano Ronaldo is having a great time with his new club, Al-Nassr. After his arrival, the player was assigned as the captain of the club. He scored many important goals for his club last season and won the league with them. Cristiano wants to do the same this year, and the player is giving his all on the pitch.

It seems like luck is not favouring the Portuguese, as one of his goals was disallowed in a recent match. The decision was quite controversial, and it was easy to spot Ronaldo’s frustration with a single look.

Wilmar Roldan set to officiate the Al-Nassr vs. Al-Raed clash

The Middle Eastern clubs have been stealing one player after another from Europe, but now the Saudi Pro League also wants to take away the referees. Colombian referee Wilmar Alexander Roldán Pérez is now set to officiate the match between Al-Nassr and Al-Raed that will take place on September 16, 2023. The two clubs currently sit in the 7th and 15th positions on the table, respectively.

Al Nassr

Wilmar Roldan officiated his first international match in 2008. Since then, the referee has been responsible for judging various important matches. He officiated various matches in the 2014 and 2018 FIFA World Cups. Apart from that, Wilmar Roldan was also part of the 2012 Olympic Tournament. In 2015, the Colombian was ranked as the 7th best referee by the IFFHS (International Federation of Football History & Statistics). It seems like the Middle East wants the players as well as the referees for themselves.

VAR denied Cristiano Ronaldo’s spectacular header for Al Nassr

During his time in Europe, Cristiano Ronaldo was on the receiving end of many controversial decisions. The player endured a lot there, and things have not changed after his move to Al Nassr. On August 29, 2023, Al-Nassr faced Al-Shabab in the Saudi Professional League Round 4. Cristiano Ronaldo scored a brace in the game, but it could have been a hat trick if one of his goals was not disallowed by referee Ismael Elfath.

After scoring a penalty in the 13th minute, Ronaldo had another opportunity to add one more goal to his name after Al-Nassr was awarded a corner. The player jumped up in his signature manner to receive the ball and headed it into the back of the net. He instantly went to celebrate with his team, but the referee soon put a stop to his celebration.

Al-Nassr

After a VAR decision, the referee disallowed the goal as Cristiano pushed a defender away from him to create space. The Portuguese thought the decision was unfair and yelled “Always against me” in frustration.

Many fans think the decision is controversial, but it does not matter what anyone thinks as the referee gets the final say in the game. Cristiano Ronaldo will make another appearance for Al Nassr on Saturday against Al-Raed, and hopefully, the player won’t have to deal with any controversial decisions this time.
