Ex-Kansas State star Deuce Vaughn arrival puts doubt on WR KaVontae Turpin’s 2023 NFL season roster spot for Cowboys

The NFL is known for its intense competition, where even the slightest changes to a team’s roster can have significant impacts on its fortunes. The recent arrival of Deuce Vaughn to the Dallas Cowboys is one such change that could have ripple effects throughout the organization. While the former Kansas State star has a chance to make the roster as a running back, many are speculating that his arrival could put the roster spot of KaVontae Turpin in jeopardy.

NFL draft is big time for small (in size only) running back

Turpin had a solid debut season in the NFL, earning a Pro Bowl nod for his impressive kick and punt returns. However, the selection of Vaughn has some insiders and fans wondering whether the speedy receiver’s job is safe.

Mario Herrera of Inside the Star has predicted that Vaughn could take over kick return duties from Turpin, citing the former’s better vision and playmaking ability. Turpin would still be the team’s primary specialist on punts.

“A closer eye would tell you that Turpin left meat on the bone on kick returns. None bigger than running into his own player in the NFC Divisional round against San Francisco. Deuce has better vision and brings a playmaking element to the offense that was sorely lacking in 2022.”

While this is just speculation at this point, it’s not hard to see why some believe that Turpin could be on the roster bubble. Despite his Pro Bowl accolades, the receiver has yet to establish himself as a contributor on offense.

Turpin’s Chances and Potential Impact of Deuce Vaughn

Mike Fisher of Sports Illustrated believes that Turpin is not a lock to make the final roster, though he admits that it would be upset if Dallas were to move on from the playmaker.

“But he did experience a few late-season gaffes even on teams, and as much as the coaches talked about integrating him into the offense, that never happened.”

Vaughn’s versatility could be a major factor in his potential impact on the Cowboys. The former Kansas State star was a workhorse for his college team, racking up impressive numbers both on the ground and through the air. He also showed promise as a return man during his brief stint on special teams in 2020. While the Cowboys may primarily use him as a running back, his ability to contribute on special teams could make him a valuable asset to the team.

Overall, the arrival of Deuce Vaughn is an exciting development for the Dallas Cowboys. While it remains to be seen how he will fit into the team’s plans, his versatility and playmaking ability make him an intriguing prospect. Whether or not his arrival spells the end of KaVontae Turpin’s time in Dallas remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the competition for roster spots on America’s Team is as intense as ever.
