Javon Hargrave signed a four-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers in March. And it was a really surprising move for a team known for its conservative approach to free agency. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at how Hargrave has impacted the 49ers. And why his signing has changed the team’s approach to free agency.
Javon Hargrave will wear No. 98 with the 49ers
In the past, the 49ers have been known for their conservative approach to the free-agent market. The CEO/owner Jed York emphasized the importance of deliberate spending. However, the team made waves when they signed star defensive tackle Javon Hargrave to a four-year, $84 million contract in March.
Despite the team’s history of being cautious with free agency spending, York explained that they are willing to invest in players that can contribute to the team’s success.
“We are never going to be a huge spender, but I think when we do spend, we have to make sure it’s deliberate,” York said while at the NFL Annual Meeting this week. “Making the trade for Christian [McCaffrey] last year, getting Javon [Hargrave] and a few others in free agency, this year.”
“You want to make sure you’re adding to the club and making sure you’re giving the club a chance to win.”
With a strong roster built by general manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan, Hargrave’s addition was unexpected but welcomed.
Hargrave has only earned one Pro Bowl selection in his seven-year career. But he has made a significant impact on the field with 40.5 quarterback sacks to his credit. In his most recent season with the Philadelphia Eagles, he recorded 60 total tackles, 16 quarterback hits, and 12 sacks.
What did York say about Javon Hargrave?
York praised Hargrave’s ability to make a difference and help the team compete against the best teams in the league.
“Watching him play last year, he played very well against us in the NFC Championship Game, and he’s a guy who can make a difference,” York said.
“When you have a Super Bowl-caliber defensive line, he gives you a chance to compete against the best teams in this league and that’s who we have to beat if we want to win a Super Bowl.”
Javon Hargrave’s signing with the San Francisco 49ers may have been a surprise to many. But his impact on the team has been significant. His performance on the field and leadership in the locker room have caused a shift in the 49ers’ free-agency spending strategy. It has proven that investing in the right players can pay off in the long run.
