“I expect to stay”: Real Madrid flop Eden Hazard wants to run down his current contract with Los Blancos

Eden Hazard has said that he expects to say at Real Madrid next season as well. The Belgian has received very little playing time in recent years.

Eden Hazard refuses to leave Real Madrid. Even though Carlo Ancelotti hardly uses him, the Belgian stated on Spanish radio ‘Cadena Cope‘ after winning the Copa del Rey that he intends to fulfill his contract.

After Real Madrid clinched their 20th Copa Del Rey on Sunday after beating Osasuna 2-1, Hazard spoke to the press. When asked by a journalist whether he will stay next summer, the Belgian stated,

“Honestly, I’m planning to stay at Real Madrid next season. I expect to stay as I want to celebrate the last year of the contract I have left.”

He also stated his desire to play more, “I have a good relationship with the club and with the players too. I want to play, but I know it’s very difficult. I have to work and hope I can play more.”

The former Chelsea legend will have his contract expire next summer. It is unclear what he will do next as Real are highly unlikely to offer him a renewal of his contract. It seems like the situation of former player Gareth Bale. The Welshman in his last years at the club also was out of favor but did not move to a new club. Instead, he decided to sit out his huge contract at the club earning him millions.

What went wrong with Eden Hazard?

The former Chelsea superstar decided to move to Real Madrid as a higher calling of his career in 2019 for an expensive fee of £ 103.5 million. But long spells of injury along with fitness issues due to the player’s lack of seriousness in training and unhealthy habits led to him not performing like he used to do.

Injuries have affected Hazard’s Real Madrid career

With only 7 goals and 11 assists in very few games across four seasons, Hazard has fallen from grace. The skillful winger that used to demolish defenses in the Premier League is now a bench warmer at Real Madrid. He has scored only one goal in six appearances this season, and in the previous season when Madrid won three important trophies, Hazard had a goalless campaign.

The meteoric rise of Vinicius Junior, along with the likes of Rodrygo, and Marco Asensio in the team, also mean that his place in the starting eleven is not secured anymore.

Real Madrid will now face Manchester City tomorrow in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final fixtures. Hazard will be expected to be on the bench and it remains to be seen what becomes of the 32-year-old’s future at the capital.
