Injuries of QB Sam Darnold-Baker Mayfield sends Panthers on backfoot against defending champion

A growing injury list is the last thing a team would want to have before going through the crucial fixtures of a season. Unfortunately, before playing the defending champions, the LA Rams, the Carolina Panthers are up against the wall because of their expanding injury list.

Following the injury of Sam Donald, Baker Mayfield also faced an injury after he sprained his ankle against the San Francisco 49ers. The Panthers placed Mayfield on the questionable list. With their two best quarterbacks sidelined, the team’s journey to this season will only get more difficult.

The situation is looking better for Mayfield because he attended a practice session wearing safety boots. “Baker had a great workout this morning. He looked good.” In the pre-match press conference, Panthers’ interim coach Steve Wilks gave an update on Baker’s injury situation. “We’re still waiting on the last preliminary.” Wilks said.

Mayfield has suffered as much as the Panthers this season, with only four touchdowns in five starts. But his injury might not be severe enough to put him on the sidelines for an extended period. Interim coach Wilks believes he’ll be able to pick Baker soon. “I think Baker, hopefully, will be there with availability to suit up,” Wilks said.

Who will be replacing Baker Mayfield?

Quarterback Phillip Walker will be replacing Baker in the upcoming games. “I’m going to start P.J.” The Panthers’ interim coach confirmed P.J. Walker’s participation in Sunday’s game against the Rams.

The quarterback from New Jersey has only made 1 appearance this season and impressed everyone with an 83% success rate on passing. He has only made 2 starts with the Panthers ever since he joined them for the first time in 2020.

It will certainly be a huge game for him to show his capability and become a regular starter for the franchise. As the interim coach, Wilks, is placing his bet on P.J., only Sunday’s game will reveal how much he is up for this challenge.
