Lionel Messi reaches career milestone as his assist propels Kylian Mbappe’s last minute PSG winner

Lionel Messi can’t seem to stop breaking records. Yesterday he managed to make another record as he became the first player with 300 club career assists. He reached the milestone in Paris Saint Germain’s 2-1 win against Brest when he assisted Kylian Mbappe’s 90th-minute winner.

After a tough first year at PSG, Messi is now in comfort in his second season. Currently, Messi has 13 goals and 13 assists in Ligue 1 this season. He is the highest assist provider in the league. In total, he has 17 in all competitions, including 4 in the Champions League. The previous season he had 14 assists which means he has 31 assists total for PSG. He also has 29 goals for PSG.

At Barcelona, where he spent most of his career, he has 269 assists, the most for a single club. 192 of them came in La Liga, which is the highest amount. He has 40 assists in UCL games, 36 of them for the Catalans. The other 41 assists came in other cup competitions. Messi has a total of 353 assists in his career, with 53 of them for his national team Argentina.

Mbappes’s goal was also special. After previously becoming the all-time topscorer for PSG, he has now equalized Edinson Cavani’s record of 138 goals for PSG in Ligue 1. Mbappe has 154 Lique 1 goals in total, 15 of them for Monaco. 

How did the game go for PSG and Lionel Messi?

The game had started well for PSG when Carlos Soler managed to open the scoring in the 37th minute from Mbappe’s saved shot. Brest managed to quickly equalize in the 43rd-minute midfielder Franck Honorat scored. After a lengthy match, in the 90th minute, after Nuno Mendes clears the ball, it reaches Messi, who calmly flicks the ball forward to Mbappe, who manages to outrun the defenders and round the goalkeeper to win PSG the game.

The win puts PSG in first place with 66 points from 27 matches as they look to win Ligue 1 after another disappointing UEFA Champions League campaign. They were knocked out 3-0 aggregate by Bayern Munich in the Round of 16.

Both Messi and Neymar are reportedly close to leaving, with the latter being kicked out apparently for failing to live up to his expectations. Neymar is being scouted by Chelsea as a super signing. Messi’s contract expires in the summer, and he is reportedly enticed to forego a contract extension with Paris to either go back to boyhood club Barcelona or Inter Miami, co-owned by David Beckham.
