Former Everton midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson is set to return to the soccer pitch this summer after being absent for a year due to charges pressed against him.
The 33-year-old Iceland international left the Toffees at the end of the 2021-22 season as a free agent and was unable to find a club until recently. According to reports, Sigurdsson is set to join Major League Soccer outfit DC United, managed by former Manchester United legend and Gylfi’s former teammate Wayne Rooney.
What was Gylfi Sigurdsson charged with?
In July 2021, Gylfi was detained on charges of engaging in child sex offenses. However, he was granted bail soon after being taken into custody, and it was later renewed, so it was due to expire in July 2022.
Everton placed Sigurdsson on indefinite administrative leave following his initial arrest. Following the news’s release, State, a Danish beverage company, removed the player from all of their advertisements. The former international for Iceland never returned to action for the Premier League team. He officially departed the team in the summer of 2022 after his contract expired.

The former Everton midfielder recently received a complete acquittal on all charges. This choice was made following an agreement to drop the charges by the investigator and the prosecutors. No further legal action will be taken against Gylfi, according to the police. The Greater Manchester Police Department issued a statement on Friday, April 14, 2023, informing the public of this development.
Is Gylfi Sigurdsson’s move to DC United confirmed?
As of now, it is all speculation, as neither the player nor the Washington-based club has confirmed anything. A source with firsthand knowledge of the matter claims that the deal is still in its infancy and that no formal offer has yet been made.
