Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti explains how Sergio Ramos saved his career at Santiago Bernabeu

Carlo Ancelotti is one of the top names in the elite list of head coaches in Europe. He is currently managing Real Madrid in his second spell with the 14-time UEFA Champions League winners, having moved to the Spanish capital from the Premier League club Everton.

The Italian gaffer boasts a reputable CV, having managed some of the most elite clubs in Europe throughout his managerial career, including AC Milan, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, PSG, and Juventus. Ancelotti recently mentioned ex-captain and club legend Sergio Ramos’ role in his first tenure at Los Blancos ahead of their clash against Sevilla.

The 64-year-old returned to Real Madrid after resigning from his position at Everton. Upon being approached by the Spanish side, Carlo Ancelotti agreed to take charge, replacing his former assistant at the club during his first stint, Zinedine Zidane, who had a successful tenure as a manager in Madrid.

In his first season, he led Los Blancos to their 14th Champions League glory and secured the 35th La Liga title in the 2021/22 season, marking one of the most exhilarating Champions League campaigns in recent times. However, in the following season, the club failed to retain both of their titles, raising questions regarding his management.

It has previously been reported that Carlo Ancelotti will join Brazil’s national team as their new head coach after his term with Real Madrid ends in the summer of 2024. Amid the speculations, the coach revealed that if it wasn’t for Sergio Ramos, he would have lost his job back in 2014.

Recently, ex-Blanco Sergio Ramos returned to his boyhood club Sevilla as a free agent from PSG. The defender had spent 16 years in Madrid, where he captained his side to an iconic 3-peat Champions League triumph. He scored the famous “La Decima” 93rd-minute equalizer against City rival Atletico Madrid in the 2014 Champions League final in Lisbon under the leadership of then-head coach Ancelotti.

Ancelotti recently opened up about his relationship with former Real Madrid player Sergio Ramos ahead of their match against Sevilla, stating, “I’d love to see Ramos and say hello.”

“If I’m here today it’s because of Sergio Ramos. If he hadn’t scored the goal in the UCL final, I probably wouldn’t be here. For that, and for everything he did for this club, everybody has a lot of affection for him… He’ll play well for sure.”, he added.
