Skip Bayless fires shots at Victor Wembanyama after Spurs narrow defeat to Rockets

Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs lost the home game against the Houston Rockets on Tuesday night. This was the Spurs’ second consecutive loss at home after falling short to the Golden State Warriors the previous night.

Spurs lost to the Warriors on Monday even though Steph Curry was out due to his injury, and now they lost to the Rockets, who are currently without Alperen Sengun. Skip Bayless found the 101-103 loss unpleasant and expressed some of his thoughts about the matter.

Skip Bayless takes a sly dig at Victor Wembanyama

It wasn’t the night for Wembanyama, and hence, he was criticized by fans all over the world for his poor performance. One of the critics was Skip Bayless, the sports commentator, who expressed his dissatisfaction with Wemby’s performance in the matchup, saying that he expected better from the 2024 Rookie of the Year frontrunner.

Bayless went to X to express his thoughts about the match, saying, “No way should Wemby allow the Spurs to lose at home to the Rockets without Sengun. Wemby is so much better than that.” His post took the fans by surprise, as Skip was being practical for a change and was respectful towards the rookie while criticizing his performance.

During the Spurs and the Rockets’ previous matchup, Sengun completely dominated Wemby by recording a 45-point and 16-rebound double-double, while the 7’4 rookie just had 10 points. And with Sengun injured, the Spurs still failed to win against their fellow Texas competitors.

Another Twitter fan said, “This is where Devin and Wemby need to step up and take over. Enough of the dumb difficult step backs. The Rockets have no one that can defend the rim. Attack the paint. Get Vic the ball early in the short roll off the ball going downhill. North to South.”

Victor Wembanyama’s performance against the Rockets

With the Rockets winning the regular-season game series against the Spurs, it was Wemby’s third consecutive matchup against the Rockets, where he failed to score more than 20 points. According to Wembanyama, the Houston Rockets are a very aggressive team.

Wembanyama couldn’t deliver his best on the court, and he ended up with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 assists on 5-12 FG and shooting 28% from the three-pointer line. The Spurs failed to attack the paint, which would’ve been helpful as the Rockets had nobody to protect the rim.

The Spurs are already out of playoff contention with a record of 14-52, which is the third-worst record in the league after going 2-7 in their last 10 matchups. The Spurs upcoming matchup is against the Denver Nuggets on Friday.
