Soccer transfer rumor: Chelsea to sell Mason Mount if their academy star fails to agree on contract extension

Chelsea star Mason Mount could leave the Premier League club if both parties do not reach an agreement on a new contract extension soon. He could leave as soon as this summer.

Both parties were working on a contract extension since the start of the season, however, negotiations have since been stalled as both cannot agree on terms. The club wants to offer the academy graduate a long term deal similar to the one they handed fellow academy graduate Reece James in September.

Mount does want to stay but wants his wages to match Reece James’s as he thinks he has huge importance for the first team. However, Chelsea is said to be hesitant to offer him the same wages.

Mount only has just one year on his contract until July of next year after which he will become a free agent. According to the Athletic, Chelsea will not let negotiations continue next summer or Mount will have to leave. If he does refuse to sign a contract by the end of this season, the 24 year old England international will have to leave as the club doesn’t want to lose him on a free transfer in 2024.

A number of previous stars like Antonio Rüdiger and Andreas Christensen left the club in the previous summer on free transfers to Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively. Captain César Azpilicueta also almost left the club for free to Barcelona before agreeing to stay. It seems the club management has finally learned their lesson and will not allow more free transfers.

A lot of teams, most of them Premier League clubs are monitoring the situation. Manchester United, Manchester City, and Liverpool are all ready to bid for the player if Chelsea does sell him this summer. Liverpool has a real interest Other parties interested are PSG, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid. Chelsea may try to include Mason Mount in a swap deal for Joao Felix’s permanent transfer. Felix is currently on loan at Chelsea.

Mount had a disappointing season with 3 goals in 31 appearances. There is no doubt that poor performances on the pitch are affecting the contract negotiations off the pitch. With a lot of new talented players available since owner Todd Boehly spent a lot of money on transfers, leaving Mount from the team could be a possibility.

Manager Graham Potter talked about Mount’s contract situation when asked, “It’s always complicated. It’s best I leave it with Mason and the club… Mount has been fantastic to work with, an important player. I hope it gets resolved quickly”.

Potter is said to still trust in Mount and many Chelsea supporters do want the longtime midfielder to stay having watched him reach the first team from the academy. The club is confident that they can convince Mount to sign the contract.
