Transfer rumour: David De Gea handed career lifeline by European giant

Former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea was once considered one of the top goalkeepers in the world. However, after parting ways with the Red Devils at the end of last season, the 33-year-old failed to find a new home and is now a free agent.

However, it looks like the veteran Spanish goalkeeper won’t be without a club for any longer, as Catalan giants Barcelona have reportedly expressed interest in signing him.

David De Gea tipped for Barcelona union

After a scrappy exit from his previous club, De Gea became a hot target for many big clubs that were searching for an experienced goalkeeper. Amidst a lot of rumors, like De Gea joining his former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo in Saudi Arabia and Manchester United wanting to bring him back to Old Trafford, he decided to snub away from all of that and stayed as a free agent.

However, the Spanish international always wanted to come back to his home among his countrymen to resume his club career again. It can be seen that FC Barcelona is eyeing a strategic move to sign David De Gea on a free transfer as a backup for German first-choice keeper Marc-André ter Stegen.

This can definitely rejuvenate De Gea’s career, which is at a standstill right now. Barcelona are one of the biggest clubs in the world, and they could well utilize the experience of a player like De Gea as Ter Stegen’s backup.

De Gea’s collapsed deadline deal with Real Madrid

David De Gea has an interesting transfer story that happened back in 2015. In the 2014–15 season of the Premier League, De Gea shone and passed through every other goalkeeper in the league by keeping numerous clean sheets and making big saves. This eventually attracted Real Madrid to consider a big move for De Gea, who were having trouble finding a replacement for the legendary Iker Casillas.

According to Sun, the deal was almost imminent but due to an unwanted mishap from United’s side, the deal collapsed on the deadline day. This incident eventually made every Real Madrid fan furious.

Although it was heartbreaking for Real Madrid fans, it was certainly a blessing for Manchester United, as De Gea continued to serve between the Red Devils posts and left as a club legend.
