Who is Dominik Szoboszlai? Meet the new Liverpool man set to become the most expensive Hungarian ever for second time

With the departures of Naby Keita and James Millner, the German coach is looking to bring some new faces to Anfield before the start of next season. After the arrival of World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister, it seems as though Dominik Szoboszlai is set to shake hands with Jurgen Klopp.

After a season full of heartbreaks and underperformance, Liverpool looks to make amends in the summer transfer window. Jurgen Klopp is looking to rejuvenate his aged midfield by bringing in some fresh legs. The Merseyside club finished fifth in the Premier League, missing out on the next season’s illustrious Champions League. The German has had his sights on the 22-year-old midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai.

Liverpool set to land Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig

The preseason tours of clubs begin in two weeks and before that, the clubs are racing to land their priority signings. Liverpool bought in the Argentine midfielder Alexis Mac Allister in the early days of the transfer window from their Premier League rivals Brighton for a fee of around $57 million. 

Renowned football journalist Fabrizio Romano tweeted that the Merseyside club has completed the signing of Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai. Liverpool acted fast and triggered the release clause of the 22-year-old midfielder which was worth $88 million. Despite heavy interest from various other clubs like Newcastle United, the Hungarian had set his sights on playing at Anfield.

The Hungarian captain came into the limelight during his time at Red Bull Salzburg where he won numerous titles which included three Austrian league titles and two domestic cups. In 2021, the midfielder became the most expensive Hungarian footballer of all time after his $25 million move to the Bundesliga team Red Bull Leipzig. Later, he shattered his record with his ground-breaking move to Liverpool.

Dominik Szoboszlai made his national team debut for the senior team during the 2020 European qualifiers against Slovakia. Since then the young midfielder has earned 32 caps for his nation while scoring 7 goals. Szoboszlai’s performances made a positive impression on the national team coach Marco Rossi which earned him the captaincy of the Hungary national team.  

Liverpool is making moves in the early stages of the transfer window and hopes to be ready come the start of the Premier League season in August. Jurgen Klopp is looking to strengthen various areas of the pitch but not more so than the midfield. After a disappointing last season, Jurgen Klopp would be desperate to provide the Liverpool fans with something to cheer for in the next season.
