Why did Eagles receive four compensatory picks in NFL Draft 2024?

The party poppers have settled in Kansas City, and the 2023 NFL champions are etched in history. But for the rest of the league, the focus has already shifted to the upcoming season and the quest for glory. The Philadelphia Eagles, whose lone Super Bowl win came back in 2017, face a critical year as they attempt to recapture their championship form.

The sounds of the 2024 NFL Draft are getting closer, and with it comes news that the Philadelphia Eagles have been awarded compensatory picks. These extra selections will strengthen their arsenal as they head into the war zone.

Why did the Eagles get compensatory NFL draft picks?

The NFL awarded 34 compensatory picks to 14 teams for the 2024 Draft. This allocation, guided by the NFL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, aims to level the playing field by giving teams that lost key free agents additional draft capital. The Philadelphia Eagles are among the biggest beneficiaries, landing a quartet of compensatory picks.

The distribution of compensatory picks spans from the third to the seventh round and is determined by the value of compensatory free agents lost by each team. The formula guiding compensatory free agents takes into account factors such as salary, playing time, and postseason honors.

The Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers lead the pack, each receiving five compensatory picks this season. Following closely behind are the Green Bay Packers, New Orleans Saints, and New York Jets, each securing three compensatory picks.

Additionally, the Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills, Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Chargers, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers

These compensatory picks aim to provide teams with additional selections based on their net losses in free agency. The 2024 NFL Draft is scheduled to take place in Detroit from April 25 to 27.

With the addition of compensatory picks, teams have an extra chance to secure promising players and enhance their squads for the upcoming season.

Looking at Eagles 2023 NFL season

The Eagles soared into last season as the reigning NFC champions, buoyed by their prior success. They rattled off an impressive 10-1 start, igniting a fire of excitement among the fanbase. However, their momentum stalled after Week 13, as their dominance waned.

After an early roaring start to the season, the Eagles concluded the season with an 11-6 record. They secured the second seed in the NFC East and a playoff berth. However, their championship aspirations were quickly dashed after a disappointing Wild Card round defeat to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Eagles fell short in a lopsided 9-32 loss.

The Eagles season might not have ended the way they wanted, but there were definitely some players who really impressed. Six Eagles players were even recognized for their amazing play by being selected to the Pro Bowl. This prestigious honor goes to the best players in the league at their position. The six Eagles players named to the 2024 Pro Bowl are WR A.J. Brown, C Jason Kelce, RT Lane Johnson, LG Landon Dickerson, RB D’Andre Swift, and ED Haason Reddick. Brown, Kelce, and Johnson, according to Philly Voice.

In addition to Pro Bowl honors, several Eagles players also received recognition in the AP All-Pro selections. Jason Kelce secured a spot on the first team before closing his cleats recently. Additionally, wide receiver A. J. Brown, tackle Lane Johnson, and kicker Jake Elliott earned spots on the second team.
