NFL Trade Rumors: Titans TE Derrick Henry expected to enter the free agency market, unlikely to return to Tennessee

Derrick Henry is regarded as one of the best tight ends in the NFL. In 2020, he was set to become a free agent, but the Tennessee Titans franchise tagged him and extended a long-term deal to ensure they retained the services of the standout tight end.

However, as the 2024 NFL free agency approaches, it appears that the Titans will likely part ways with Derrick Henry.

Titans to lose Derrick Henry to free agency

Derrick Henry, now 31 years old, is set to hit free agency for the first time in his career. Initially, there were expectations that the Titans would re-sign him, but it now appears unlikely.

Reportedly, the Titans will not be able to secure a new deal with the tight end, and NFL teams categorize him in the second tier of running backs set to become available.

Henry, famous for his energy drink, is the Titans’ most notable free agent. He spent eight seasons with the team and during that time played incredibly.

As the Titans are releasing multiple players, they will have an estimated $80.7 million in salary cap space available. This will allow the team to sign some of the best players for the upcoming season.

Derrick Henry has always held a strong affection for the Titans franchise and the fanbase he has built over the years. Amidst these trade speculations, he also tweeted expressing gratitude to his fans.

“I love all Titans fans, y’all have made my NFL dream fun as hell throughout the years. Always grateful for all of y’all’s support.”

Just because Derrick Henry will hit free agency doesn’t mean the team can’t re-sign him. The Titans can re-sign all of their free agents, but it will only be possible if the team wants to do so, and the players also agree to rejoin the Titans.

Reportedly, Derrick Henry will command a contract worth roughly $10 million per year, a slight decrease from the $12.5 million he was owed for 2023. Last season, he was the NFL’s second-leading rusher with 1,167 yards and 12 touchdowns, but his 4.2 yards per carry represented a career low.

The Titans’ coach expressed interest in bringing Henry back to the team, but for now, there are more chances of the tight end hitting free agency.

What are the possible landing spots for Derrick Henry?

Although Derrick Henry faced career lows in the 2023 season, he will still be one of the highly sought-after players. Here are the five most favorite potential landing spots for Derrick Henry.

The Baltimore Ravens are the first team expected to sign the TE. The team needs to upgrade at running back with J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards heading to free agency. Henry would fit well in Todd Monken’s offense and could create a powerful duo with Lamar Jackson.

The Chicago Bears are another team expected to make significant improvements across their offense, including quarterback position. With ample salary cap space and no clear No. 1 option in their backfield, Henry would be a great addition.

The Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has expressed a commitment to going “all in” during the offseason. The team’s decision not to franchise Tony Pollard, who was expecting to become RB1, indicates a potential need at the running back position. Derrick Henry could thrive in Dallas’ offensive scheme.

The Los Angeles Chargers are likely to move on from Austin Ekeler. Despite potential salary cap limitations, Henry’s fit with new coach Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman could make him an attractive option.

The Philadelphia Eagles are another great landing spot for Derrick Henry. With D’Andre Swift heading to free agency, the Eagles could be in the market for a running back and Henry would fit in perfectly.

While these five teams emerge as the potential landing spots, the TE might choose to move on with some other team based on factors like contract worth and future growth potential.
