Why will Arsenal face Manchester City in FA Community Shield despite a trophyless season? Explaining the format of English soccer’s curtain raiser

Manchester City and Arsenal had a memorable 2022-23 season; some memories to be fond of and others to forget. Manchester City won the treble of the Champions League, the FA Cup, and the prestigious Premier League silverware. On the other hand, Arsenal started the season in the top flight. Their performance was so promising that many football fans and pundits were convinced it was their time to clinch the title again after so many years.

The dawn of a new season is upon us.  In this year’s FA Community Shield duel, the Football Association has confirmed that Arsenal will face Manchester City on the 6th day of August.

Why will Arsenal face City in FA Community Shield?

The FA Cup is usually played between the winners of the Premier League and the FA Cup. Manchester City won both the Premier League and FA Cup last time out. Hence, because there are no distinct winners, Arsenal will face off against the Citizens because they finished second in the league.

If Manchester United had beaten City in their FA Cup final tie last season, they would now be playing City in the Community Shield instead.

It is instructive to note that the FA Community Shield ushers in a new Premier League season, which will begin on the 11th day of August. Arsenal Football Club, one of the teams with the most prominent status in the English Premier League, dazzled in their 2022/23 pre-season games and spent 248 days at the top of the Premier League table. In March 2023, Arteta’s men were 8 points clear, with Man City right after, and everyone thought that it was high time the Premier League trophy returned to North London.

It is said that no side has ever gone as far as 248 days at the top of the table without winning the league, but Arsenal did it; they added another laudable accolade to their decorated Premier League cabinet. The famous Manchester United legend Gary Neville read the situation early enough and made a bold prediction. In January, Gary told Skyports emphatically that; “They won’t win the league. Manchester City will win the league, and Man Utd will finish second, and I know that will annoy Arsenal fans!.

With a stern conviction, he added, “The reality is, I think at some point, Man City will hit a run. Once they do, they’ve got to play Arsenal twice.”
