After 11 years in Camp Nou, Legendary LB Jordi Alba set to leave Barcelona

FC Barcelona’s veteran wingback Jordi Alba will be  parting ways with the Catalan club after spending 11 years at Camp Nou.

According to reports, the 34-year-old has reached an agreement with the Blaugranas to have his contract, which is valid until the end of the 2023-24 season, terminated at the conclusion of the current season. 

A statement posted to the Barcelona website read: “FC Barcelona would like to publicly express its gratitude to Alba for his professionalism, commitment, and dedication, and his ever-positive and friendly relationship with all members of the Barca family, and wishes him every fortune in the future. Barca will always be a home for you, Jordi.”

Barcelona has made the call as part of their squad overhaul to comply with La Liga’s financial fair play rules. The club was able to register four new players at the beginning of the current season thanks to the proceeds from the sale of shares in the club’s future television rights and the media production unit Barca Studios.

The Spanish fullback has made over 450 appearances in his 11 years with the club. He joined Barcelona in 2012 from Valencia and has since gone on to score 27 goals and make 91 assists for the club.

Jordi Alba also won numerous trophies with the Blaugranas, including six LaLiga titles, five Copa Del Rey titles, and the Champions League in 2015.

Jordi Alba has been very good friends with his former teammate, seven times Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi. The 35-year-old PSG superstar took to social media to share a touching message that commemorated his friend’s farewell.

The message said: “You were more than a team-mate, a true accomplice on the pitch… And how nice it is also to be able to enjoy how well we got along on a personal level.”
