College football announcer Gary Hahn faces indefinite suspension following ‘illegal aliens’ remark at immigrants

North Carolina State basketball and college football announcer Gray Hahn was one of the best announcers with a flourishing career- In 2011 and 2020, he was selected as the North Carolina Sportscaster of the Year. With his smooth, witty, and metaphoric commentary, Hahn has entertained sports enthusiasts throughout his career.

However, sometimes using metaphoric descriptions is unsuitable for particular scenarios and can hurt certain groups and people. Hahn did precisely that and now must pay the price.

Following the offensive comment that Gary Hahn made on Friday, he has been placed on indefinite suspension. The term “illegal alien” was used by Hahn during the Duke’s Mayo Bowl to describe immigrants who were stranded in El Paso.

While talking about the score, Hahn made the racist comment, “In the Sun Bowl and amongst all the illegal aliens down in El Paso, it’s UCLA 14 and Pittsburgh six. That’s will 11:15 to go in the second quarter,”

The general manager of Wolfpack Sports Properties, Kyle Winchester, issued a statement not long after the offensive comments that the announcer had made- “Learfield has suspended Wolfpack Sports Network Play-by-Play announcer Gary Hahn indefinitely following comments made during today’s Duke Mayo Bowl radio broadcast,”

How did fans react?

Like any other conversation, fans split into two sides of one coin and went on to either take side with Hahn or go against him.

Rick Cantu’s response to Gary Hahn’s racist remark.

Supporting Hahn, a fan replied to Rick’s comment, “I don’t believe you because El Paso and the southern border is being overrun by illegal aliens.”

“This correctness BS has got to stop. Sue them.” another fan wrote.

Supporting Hahn, another fan commented, “This is bogus, he is one of my all time Wolfpack favorites……#WPN”

Hahn sure has a lot of people rooting for him as one fan wrote,  “If Gary Hahn doesn’t get “un-suspended” I’ll never listen to wolfpack radio again. He didn’t say anything that wasn’t true and doesn’t deserve this treatment. He has been loyal to NC State for a long time! And this is how he gets treated?”

What do you think should Hahn be punished, or was it racist to say such a thing, making his punishment just? Share your opinion in the comments.

  1. The reporter here had no right to label as racist the term “illegal alien.” He’s the one who should be given the boot because it’s pretty obvious he knows nothing about the nation’s federally-created immigration crisis made much worse about the incompetent “President” biden.
