Daniel Cormier lauds impressive Aljamain Sterling title defense record in bantamweight history following UFC 288 triumph: “He carries himself in the way of a champion”

Funk Master continues to solidify his status as one of the greatest bantamweight fighters in UFC history, but there are still a lot of doubters, critics, and detractors of Aljamain Sterling. Daniel Cormier asked everyone to acknowledge Sterling’s accomplishments and recognize the current bantamweight king.

Sterling risked losing his title in the fight against Henry Cejudo at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Funk Master successfully resisted Triple C and retained his gold strap. However, the Newark crowd booed him, with most spectators in the arena showing their support for Triple C.

What did Daniel Cormier say about Aljamain Sterling?

After UFC 288, Daniel Cormier discussed a number of other UFC-related topics, including Aljamain Sterling’s reign, in a recent YouTube video. The UFC Hall of Famer made it abundantly clear that Sterling deserves a lot more respect than what he currently receives.

“Guys, stop booing Aljamain. Give this man his respect. This dude is doing everything you want as a champion. He’s active, he fights the best guys that they put in front of him. He wins fights. He carries himself in a way of a champion. It’s time to stop booing Aljamain Sterling.” Cormier said.

Many people back then questioned Sterling’s credibility as the bantamweight champion owing to Petr Yan’s disqualification. The New Yorker has successfully defended the title three times now and has undoubtedly made a name for himself as one of the top bantamweight fighters in the promotion.

Sterling defeated two-time bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw, former bantamweight champion Petr Yan before Triple C to successfully defend his title. As a result, many people, like DC, who experienced similar hostility and jeers during his MMA days, believes Sterling deserves greater appreciation.

“It sucks that this happens time and time again, and in Newark, which is close to New York. It didn’t make any sense, I don’t know what this man has to do to garner your respect. If tonight wasn’t enough, you’re just never gonna be satisfied.” Cormier added.

The 33-year-old fighter is currently on a nine-fight winning streak and sits sixth in the UFC’s pound-for-pound rankings. No other bantamweight fighter in UFC history has successfully defended their title three times consecutively. In his upcoming title bout against Sean O’Malley, Sterling is on his road to defending the title for the fourth time in a row.
