Days after NFL analyst’s shocking prediction, Vikings’ Kirk Cousins addresses impending free agency amid injury woes

Kirk Cousins suffered a ruptured right Achilles at Lambeau Field last month and also had the first surgery in his career. In his absence, the team relied on Josh Dobbs who showed an impressive performance. All these factors led to speculations about the QB’s future with the Vikings.

There were speculations that he would not be able to continue with the Vikings. Initially contemplating the potential end of his football career, the 35-year-old now looks ahead with excitement and optimism.

Kirk Cousins stays committed to Vikings despite injury setback

The familyman Kirk Cousins‘ contract with the Vikings expires in March, five months before his 36th birthday. This season, he skipped games because of his injury and his replacement Josh Dobbs played incredibly well and created quite a stir in the NFL. All these factors led to uncertainty about the QB’s future with the Vikings.

However, the quarterback appeared on The Pat McAfee Show and rejected all these speculations. He emphasized that he is committed to finishing his career with the Vikings.

“You have a lot of thoughts go through your head, and one of them was: ‘Is this the last time I play football? Now a couple weeks removed I can say, ‘No, it’s not going to be.’ I’m excited to write the next chapter and see what God wants to do with it.”

While his contract extension talks were tabled in spring, he emphasized the need to focus on the current season.

The Achilles injury was the first of Cousins’ career requiring surgery that used a traditional method, not the SpeedBridge method. Now, Kirk Cousins wears a walking boot and believes he’ll participate in some portion of OTAs in May.

The QB is also actively involved in meetings and projects assigned by coach Kevin O’Connell to stay engaged with the team. Despite initial disappointment, Cousins embraces a positive outlook.

He shared that the team psychologist’s suggestions about facing adversity resonate with him, believing there’s more to his story.

“When you face adversity like this, you’ll look back down the road and many times you’re better because of it. Not in spite of it. I just believe there’s more of the story up ahead. That’s what I really believe in the core of my being,” the QB shared the words of the psychologist.

Kirk Cousins also emphasized that he is not in a hurry to recover soon. Rather he will first focus on his health and then make a comeback so he can play to his full potential. Despite the injury setback, the quarterback is optimistic about his future and is looking forward to playing again.

NFL analyst predicts Cousins’ departure

A few days back, the analyst David Kenyon predicted Cousins’ potential departure in free agency. He included the QB in the list of the top 10 players who are expected to switch teams in 2024.

According to him, the reasons were Kirk Cousins’ age (36 in 2024), the team’s cap constraints, and the performance of Dobbs and rookie Jaren Hall in the QB’s absence.

He explained that the Vikings face decisions on extensions for key players like Justin Jefferson, Danielle Hunter, and Marcus Davenport. The performance of Dobbs and Hall during Cousins’ absence could impact the team’s commitment to him.

The analyst asserted that the 36-year-old, if healthy, could be a sought-after QB in free agency but he won’t stay with the Vikings. However, the QB has himself denied all these speculations and emphasized that he will continue to play with the Vikings.

Let’s anticipate the Vikings’ decision regarding Kirk Cousins. Will they opt to give Josh Dobbs a chance, or will their commitment remain steadfast with Cousins? Tell us what you think in the comments section.
