“Free-kick and pure luck”: Manchester City legend throws dig at Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal scoring record while praising versatile Lionel Messi

The Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo debate is never ending. Ranging from fans to pundits to former players, everyone has a favorite among this two. And now a former player has hit out at Ronaldo’s abilities, claiming Lionel Messi as the better goal-scorer.

The Portuguese phenomenon and the Argentine sensation fought on the pitch for more than a decade for the best individual awards and trophies. Both have a combined 12 Ballon d’Or awards with Messi leading with seven. They have both had a long rivalry during their La Liga years where the duo played for the biggest soccer clubs Barcelona and Real Madrid. Both have been called the GOAT of soccer dividing fans, players, and other soccer legends alike.

Who has criticized Ronaldo’s goalscoring abilities?

The former player is none other than Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero. As an Argentinian and one of Messi’s longtime teammates and friends, it was obvious that he will choose Messi over Ronaldo. But his take on Ronaldo’s goalscoring abilities has been somewhat controversial, to say the least.

During a Twitch stream with internet sensation Ibai Llanos, Aguero criticized the Portuguese striker, stating that most of his goals aren’t of the caliber of Lionel Messi’s or even other Real Madrid players. He was discussing the quality of the goals scored by famous footballers over the years. He even said that other strikers from Madrid scored better goals than Ronaldo.

According to Medio Tiempo, Aguero said, “Look where he scores the goal from. Come on. All free-kick goals and pure luck. Messi’s are all at the angle, stupid … I think Raúl has better goals, Benzema, I think he has better ones.”

Although he criticized the Portuguese, Aguero did not forget to say that Ronaldo must be recognized as one of the greatest players in history, but he added that “he cannot match Messi.”

What now for Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo?

When Messi scored in PSG’s 2-0 win against OGC Nice at the Allianz Riviera on Saturday, the 35-year-old surpassed Ronaldo, by scoring his 702nd goal at the club level in Europe.

Messi’s goal sent him to the top of the club scoring charts, with Ronaldo trailing him with 701 goals. As Ronaldo is no longer in Europe and has little chance of returning to Europe, it seems this is one record that Messi would triumph over.

The Portuguese sensation joined Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr in January after parting ways with Manchester United. The star footballer was offered a contract that made him the world’s best-paid player. Cristiano had a dream start to life and scored eight goals, including two hat tricks in the Saudi Pro League, and even won the Player of the Month award for February.

Meanwhile, Messi was knocked out of the Champions League with PSG and is closer to an exit. Barcelona is pushing strongly for the Argentine to return but other clubs like A Hilal and Inter Miami are possible destinations.me
