“I don’t think he’s a striker but he’s fantastic” Ex-Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson lauds Marcus Rashford but noted they require proper attacker

Following Manchester United’s Carabao Cup triumph on Sunday, legendary United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was full of praises for Marcus Rashford. However, he insisted that Manchester United still needs to find a new goalscorer in the summer.

Manchester United won its first trophy since 2017 with a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United in the EFL Cup final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday. Casemiro scored the opener in the 33rd minute, heading home a freekick from Luke Shaw. Marcus Rashford added a second goal six minutes later continuing his electric form in recent weeks.

Ferguson was in the stands at Wembley as United ended their 6 years of wait for a trophy. The ex-Man United boss has 13 Premier League titles to boast of and even has been seen having dinner with new manager Erik Ten Haag before where it seems he shared some of his knowledge.

Rashford has scored 25 goals this season in all competitions for Manchester United, which is his best season. Ferguson applauded him for this but still thinks that Rashford isn’t a typical striker and that United needs to reinforce this position.

Speaking to Sky Sports Ferguson said, “I don’t think he’s a striker. He operates away from the left-hand side and has been fantastic, his finishing is always good, always keeps his shots down – which is really important for a striker – and is in a great vein of form.”

He thinks that Rashford’s goals are currently what is keeping United alive, “Unfortunately for us, he’s the main source of goals – we could do with an extra one, but he’s doing it.”

Ferguson’s opinions should not be ignored as he has managed some of the world’s best forwards during his 26 year reign at Old Trafford. He is the reason why Cristiano Ronaldo became one of the world’s best players and is the one who signed the club’s all time top scorer Wayne Rooney.

United has struggled in the striker position following Ronaldo’s ill fated departure. Antony Martial has been disappointing there and is struggling with injuries and Wout Weghorst is only a temporary solution on loan from Burnley. Rashford is a traditional left winger but has been forced to be a striker in some games due to this.

United has been linked with Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, a man who is spearheading Napoli to a historic Serie A triumph. It is said United are going to bid heavily for the player to solve their problems up front.
