Jason McCourty believes Jerod Mayo can learn from Dolphins HC Mike McDaniel’s NFL success

Mike McDaniel is one of the youngest head coaches in the NFL and is a source of inspiration for many young coaches, including the Patriots’ new HC, Jerod Mayo. The Patriots finally made the hard decision to part ways with Bill Belichick and signed Jerod Mayo.

However, the young age of Mayo has raised some concerns. Jason McCourty recently talked about this situation and expressed satisfaction at this move by citing the example of Mike McDaniel.

Jason McCourty cites Mike McDaniel in advice to Jerod Mayo

Jason McCourty believes that the young age of Jerod Mayo shouldn’t be considered a negative factor. Despite many people criticizing the Patriots for choosing a young coach to help them recover from their worst rank, McCourty said that like Mike McDaniel, he can help the team succeed.

McCourty shared his personal experience of meeting with Mike McDaniel, who was accused of stealing his players’ girlfriends. Despite not playing under McDaniel, he acknowledged his unique coaching style and personality traits, emphasizing the importance of authenticity in leadership.

“I didn’t get a chance to play for Mike McDaniel, but I got a chance to meet with him,” McCourty said. “I was injured and was still in the building in March [when he was hired], and we sat down and talked for probably 30-40 minutes. The first time I ever met him — the quirkiness, and the things about him we’ve all seen transpire over the last two years — that’s who he was.”

The former Dolphins’s captain advised Mayo to stay true to himself and remain consistent in his leadership style.

“So I look at it for Jerod, the best thing you can do for yourself is be yourself, and be honest.”

He also warned against drastic changes in behavior when transitioning to a head coaching role, as it may affect relationships with players.

“I think the worst thing that can possibly happen is for players to see you act one way for however many years that he’s been there as a linebackers coach, and next thing you know you become the head guy and you totally flip because now more things fall on you and you have to make more decisions.”

Jerod Mayo, at 38 years old, is one of the youngest NFL coaches, second only to Mike Macdonald. However, McCourty believes that, just as Mike McDaniel has helped his team succeed, Jerod Mayo also has the potential.

Dolphins performances under HC Mike McDaniel

Mike McDaniel, 41 years old, is one of the youngest coaches in the NFL. In 2022, he was named the 11th head coach of the Dolphins. He became the fifth coach on the team to lead them to the playoffs in the first season and just the sixth to post a winning record (9-8) in his first year at the helm.

Not only that, but McDaniel’s leadership also helped multiple Dolphins players reach new career milestones. Four players earned Pro Bowl selections, which included Terron Armstead, Bradley Chubb, Tyreek Hill, and Xavien Howard. Similarly, multiple players also had the best season of their career under Mike McDaniel’s leadership.

As the offensive play-caller, Mike McDaniel helped the team’s offense finish in the top 10 for the first time since 1995. The Dolphins finished 11th in scoring offense. It was the team’s best finish since 2014.

Mike McDaniel’s biggest achievements were leading the team to back-to-back playoffs for the first time since 2001. At such a young age, Mike McDaniel has proven himself to be one of the best head coaches in the NFL. He truly is an inspiration for all young coaches in the league.
