Lionel Messi, Sergio Ramos contract on pause due to PSG‘s Champions League sanctions treat

Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos have a long history. They used to be rivals at Barcelona and Real Madrid and now they are teammates at Paris Saint Germain. However, now both of their contracts with PSG have been put on hold amid rumors of a sanction on the club.

PSG are facing a sanction from UEFA as they have been charged with breaking Financial Fair Play rules. They are one of ten clubs that were fined for breaching FFP rules in the 2020-21 season. While they have paid a €10 million fine, they still have €45 million in suspended future fines. And now further punishments could follow if they do not mend their ways.

UEFA’s FFP rules could result in PSG getting sanctioned

The French club has been revealed to have record loss margins in the last few years with the most recent seasonal loss being €370m. The club is actively trying to reduce its wage bill, and it may be forced to make some tough decisions.

Many forms of sanctions could be imposed on the club. They could be rejected to register any more new players to their European squad and their registered squad could also be forced to drop from 25 to 23.

According to Diario AS, the biggest threat that the club fears are being kicked out of the competition entirely. The sanctions could be imposed up to the season of 2024-25, resulting in significant financial losses and loss of prestige. That is why the club is working on reducing the wage bill as soon as possible.

Having made Kylian Mbappe the highest-paid player with a new contract last summer, the club won’t sell him as he is by far their best player and is also young having years of his best football ahead of him. Lionel Messi and Ramos happen to be among the highest-paid players in the world. They are also old and past their prime. It makes sense that the club will try to get rid of both of their wages.

Both Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos will have their contracts expire this summer. They joined PSG for free in the summer of 2021 when both left Barcelona and Real Madrid.

At the age of 36, Ramos impressed this year with some solid performances. But PSG is already about to get Milan Skriniar for free in the summer and may sign Pau Torres from Villareal as well. Ramos either has to take a big wage cut to renew his contract or leave. Messi has been exceptional with 13 goals and 13 assists this season.

However, he is being reported to want to leave the club for a return back to Barcelona or a move to Inter Miami. Neymar Jr is also close to leaving PSG, with many clubs interested in buying the Brazilian.

L’Equipe reports that the Parisians are going to do everything possible to keep Messi and Ramos at the club. Discussions between the players and the club took place but sanction threats have put the talks on hold. The club needs to do a complete restructuring of finances or they face losing two of their best players for free.
