Louis Rees-Zammit’s NFL role revealed: Chiefs assign ex-Rugby star’s official jersey number

The Kansas City Chiefs have acquired a new addition to their roster, Louis Rees-Zammit. On Friday, the team made an announcement about their agreement with Rees-Zammit, a former rugby union star.

However, it was still not confirmed at which position the 23-year-old would be playing as he had been training to play a hybrid role. Recently, Louis Rees-Zammit visited the Chiefs stadium where his position with the team finally got confirmed and he also chose his jersey number.

Which NFL position is Louis Rees-Zammit expected to play for the Chiefs?

Louis Rees-Zammit impressed the Chiefs with his exceptional performance who signed him on a three-year deal reportedly worth $900,000 a year. Further details about the contract were not revealed considering the position of the former rugby player wasn’t confirmed.

After some debate on whether Rees-Zammit should get a running back or wide receiver position, the Chiefs have finalized that he will get the RB position. The Chiefs have officially listed him as a running back as he joins the likes of Isiah Pacheco and La’Mical Perine in the side’s backfield.

Louis Rees-Zammit has never played football before quitting rugby in January. Still, he managed to impress the scouts at the Pro Day, with more than 12 teams interested in signing him.

However, Rees-Zammit chose to sign with the back-to-back Super Bowl champions, the Chiefs where he will get to play with the most talented athletes like Patrick Mahomes.

Rees-Zammit expressed excitement at joining the Chiefs as he posted,

“Hi, Chiefs Kingdom, Louis Rees-Zammit here. Just signed, can’t wait to go! See you all at Arrowhead.”

Now, the former rugby player will need to compete with his offseason squad and prove himself so he can become part of the final 53-man roster of the Chiefs for the 2024 season.

Louis Rees-Zammit’s official NFL jersey number revealed

During his visit to the Chiefs stadium, Louis Rees-Zammit not only got his position with the team finalized but also chose his jersey number.

A photo was posted in which the former rugby player was seen holding a jersey branding his name and the number nine.

By wearing the nine-number jersey, Rees-Zammit will become only the third Chiefs running back ever to wear a single-digit jersey.

As a rugby player, he used to wear a two-digit jersey, 14, which he also wore during the IPP program. In the NFL, RBs are allowed to wear single digit numbers between 0 and 49 and 80 and 89.

The reason why Louis Rees-Zammit chose the nine number or if there’s some significance of the number has not been disclosed yet. However, now both the position and jersey number of the 23-year-old have been finalized and he is ready to compete with his offseason squad.
