MMA star Islam Makhachev dismisses ‘BMF’ title as for “bums” in fiery statement: “I don’t want this sh*t”

Islam Makhachev holds no interest in the “BMF” title and believes that the UFC only selects fighters to compete for it who are incapable of winning a legitimate championship.

Earlier this year, Makhachev established himself as the UFC lightweight champion by defeating Alexander Volkanovski on February 11th. Since then, the 31-year-old Russian has been patiently awaiting a deserving challenger for his title.

What is the BMF title in MMA?

The BMF title was introduced in November 2019 when Jorge Masvidal defeated Nate Diaz. However, Masvidal never defended the contentious belt, leading some to view it as a mere gimmick.

In the realm of mixed martial arts, few accolades are as both coveted and controversial as the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s BMF (Baddest Mother F***er) title.

Representing a unique fusion of spectacle and sport, the BMF title embodies the bravado, audacity, and unwavering fighting spirit that epitomize the UFC. Despite its high-profile debut, many fans consider the BMF title to be nothing more than a marketing ploy by the UFC.

Although it is not officially recognized as a UFC championship, fighters within the promotion still highly covet it.

The promotion is reintroducing the belt on July 29th for the lightweight rematch between Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje at UFC 291. Which will be held at Vivant Arena in Salt Lake City and broadcasted on pay-per-view.

Additionally, apart from vying for the championship, Poirier (29-7 MMA, 21-6 UFC) and Gaethje (24-4 MMA, 7-4 UFC) might serve as a possible title eliminator in the lightweight division.

Islam Makhachev brital jab to BMF title

The title is presently held by Makhachev (24-1 MMA, 13-1 UFC), who had expressed his firm opinions on the matter.

“If Dustin Poirier beats Justin Gaethje, and he’s gonna fight next for the lightweight title. He’s gonna come with ‘BMF’ title? I don’t want this sh*t,” Makhachev said in an interview on Daniel Cormier’s YouTube channel.

“‘BMF,’ what is this? This belt’s for the bums. First time who fought for this belt? Masvidal and Nate Diaz. Two people (who) never can be champion, you know? They give him some belt (and say). ‘Be happy, fight for ‘BMF.’

Makhachev, aged 31, has firmly stated that he has no interest in acquiring the “BMF” title as part of his collection. Instead, he remains focused on defending his official championship. Which he might potentially put on the line in a rematch against Charles Oliveira at UFC 294 in October.

Only time will reveal if anyone can overthrow the current reigning UFC lightweight champion in the foreseeable future.
