Real Madrid is being cautious with Karim Benzema ahead of El Clasico clash at Barcelona’s Camp Nou

Karim Benzema got the solitary goal in the second-leg clash against Liverpool in the Champions League as they progressed into the quarters. They won 6-2 on aggregate after their impressive 5-2 first-leg win at Anfield.

In the league, however, Real Madrid sits nine points behind Barcelona. The two rivals are set to meet this weekend in a league game as they battle for supremacy in El Clasico.

Benzema is facing the race against time to prove his fitness ahead of the huge potential clash. The French striker has been Madrid’s main man ever since Ronaldo’s departure from the club. Real Madrid will be hoping he can make it to the starting XI.

When did Benzema pick up the knock?

Carlo Ancelotti, the Italian manager of Real Madrid, confirmed that Benzema picked up a knock not long before the end of the game against Liverpool at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium. He admitted that he took Benzema off the field for precautionary reasons.

It did not seem to be that serious of an injury. Benzema was supposed to travel with the squad however he had to stay back and train alone in the gym. Benzema has been struggling with injuries for most of the 2022/2023 season. He also missed France’s World Cup 2022 campaign through injury. Some still wonder whether Argentina would have still won with Benzema on their side.

How was Karim Benzema at the Bernabeu

Benzema has become a Madrid legend. He signed for the club as an upcoming young French striker in 2009. Now he has matured and become the focal point of the attack. He also became the captain of the side ever since Ramos’ and Marcelo’s decisions to leave. He even won the Balon d’Or 2022.

Benzema will be desperate to be fit and roaring to face the solid Barcelona defense. They have conceded only 8 goals in 25 games. On the other hand, despite his injury struggles Benzema still has 19 goals this season. Ancelotti will also share the desperation to start Benzema, alongside his other start forward Vinicius Jr who he actually called the “best player in the world.”
